Does Your Bedroom Need a Makeover?

Does your bedroom need a makeover? Are you tired of your plain walls and outdated furniture? Do your pink and lace themed comforter and window treatments make you cringe? What once made you happy as a child, teenager or even young adult may not suit your needs nowadays. Why not take the time to give your bedroom a major facelift. After all, your bedroom is most likely the one room in your home that you spend the most consecutive hours in; it’s about time it got received some tender love and care. With these bedroom decorating ideas, you’ll be enjoying a fresh, comfortable and stylish bedroom in no time!

Color Your World

One of the fastest home remodeling ideas that will instantly revamp your current boring bedroom is to add a splash of color. While many homeowners may think this can be a headache and hassle, it doesn’t have to be! Even if you simply just add a fresh coat of your current color, the new layer of paint will give off the impression of a newly renovated room. However, changing your color entirely is also manageable and recommended as well. Do not be afraid to go with bold colors. Explore your dark side; sometimes painting your bedroom walls in a rich, deep color will create a soothing effect, making your bedroom an ideal getaway after a long, stressful day. Be sure to cover all furniture and items with plastic prior to beginning any sanding or painting!

Bonus: To create an ultra-trendy look, consider painting your walls with two tones, one for waist level and down, with a similar shade of color that reaches from waist to ceiling. The dual colors instantly transform your bedroom into a classy hideaway. Also, the two colors can be split by a third “ribbon” of color that compliments the two shades.

Think Small Thoughts

Not all bedroom home improvements have to be large. In fact, one of the most overlooked but easiest ways to update your bedroom is by replacing your cabinet handles on your dresser, bureau and night stand. Oftentimes, the furniture in our bedrooms may be hand-me-downs or items leftover from other rooms in your household; these items collectively create a mismatched smorgasbord of furniture that can look messy or downright tacky. By replacing the existing cabinet hardware with newer, matching and trendy pieces, you’ll instantly turn the tacky into tasteful. Choose a material that works best with your furniture’s finish; materials commonly used are nickel, brass, iron, copper and stainless steel. Stainless cabinet handles are the most popular. They are easy to clean and match any style and finish, so you won’t have to worry about changing the cabinets again if you add or replace any furniture down the road.

Bonus: While you are changing or replacing cabinet handles, consider purchasing larger knobs or drawer pulls; the larger size makes it easier to open hard-to-reach drawers and adds a touch of contemporary style instantaneously.

Go to the Mattresses

Like the infamous quote from The Godfather, another way to add comfort to your bedroom is to literally go to your mattress. If your mattress has not been replaced in the last decade or two, it is definitely time to purchase a new one! Though our inner child loves to jump on cushy beds, adults should be looking for a mattress that provides enough support for your spine, yet is soft enough to your liking. When browsing for mattresses, definitely give them a test cat-nap to see if it meets your needs. While comfort is important, also consider size. A twin bed for a mid-twenty year old may not be the best investment. If you plan on keeping your bed into your late adulthood, opt for a queen or king sized bed.

Bonus: While you’re at it, replace your pillows, too! Pillows can harbor dust, mites and oils from collected over time from your face. Replacing pillows can also alleviate allergies and allergy symptoms.
