Trappist Beer from Europe

The Different Types of European Beer

There are many different kinds of European beers that one can enjoy today and which can be purchased anywhere in the world. However, there are only a few beers of Europe which have achieved the rank of being truly great.

In this article we take a look at the kinds of beers to be found across Europe and which have all been created using various different brewing methods.

1. Lager – Of all the beers brewed in Europe today this is the most popular of them all. Such beers when being produced need to be fermented at lower temperatures than the others we mention in this article. On average the temperature at which these types of European beers are fermented is between 5 and 9 degrees Celsius. Then once fermentation has taken place they will be matured and stored at temperatures which are close to freezing.

2. Ale – This type of beer from Europe is one that needs to be fermented at higher temperatures (between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius) than the lager and also uses yeast.

Originally the yeast would settle at the top of the vessel used for brewing the ale but today there are now ones that settle at the bottom. These are much richer in colour compared to lager and there are several different varieties including a mild, bitter, brown and pale type.

3. Alt – This is a beer from Germany and is most commonly found being brewed in north cities such as Dusseldorf. This one is actually fermented in copper vats that provide it with its deep colour and also its distinctive flavour. As with traditional ales this one uses top fermentation process.

4. Biere der Garde – This is another top fermenting beer but comes from the northern regions of France. Originally this type of beer was produced in farm houses but there are now plenty of commercial breweries producing this very different type of beer.

After fermentation has completed the beer is placed into bottles to mature and sold in them. The actual bottle lid is sealed using a champagne style wired cork.

5. Lambic – This particular beer comes for Belgium and will have been created using the Gueze beer that has then been mixed with other ingredients. The limbic beers which are most favoured by Belgium’s are those that have either been mixed with Faro, Cherry or Raspberry.

6. Trappist Beers – Of all the beers of Europe available these are some of the strongest flavoured ones. All the ales are conditioned in bottles and are produced by Trappist monks situated in the towns of Orval, Rochefort, St Sixtus, Westmalle and Chimay in Belgium and Schaapskooi in the Netherlands.

Above we have shown you just a number of the wonderful types of beers of Europe one can enjoy today.

Certainly if you are having difficulties in obtaining the ones you want through your local grocery or wine/beer store you may find what you want online instead. There are numerous sites which offer a wide range of beers of Europe for you to try and which can be delivered directly to your home.

One of the most popular European beers is definitely Belgian beer which I have also written about in this other Hub.
