Beginners Guide to Successful HubPage Writing - Part II
6818th January 2008 - A Diary of my First 3 Weeks of Hubbing
I’ve written this new hub because I had a good response to my earlier hub Beginners Guide to Sucessful HubPage Writing describing my first 12 days of hubbing.
I’ve now been hubbing for just over 3 weeks and I decided against adding further to the existing hub because:
I find there are problems editing and maintaining larger hubs
- There appears to be a benefit in creating new hubs in terms of initial exposure via HubPages
- I can link the 2nd hub to the first and vice versa so both hubs give the other a boost
Where am I now with Content?
My day job inevitably interferes with my ability to write. Hence I started hubbing during the Christmas break. I planned to produce 1 new hub last weekend but managed 2, making a grand total of 8. This was a slight cheat because I recycled articles previously published in magazines. I’m keen to do less of this and produce original material, more targeted at HubPages and Adsense. More on this later.
I also recently signed up my wife who has also produced 2 hubs. I have linked her Hub account to my Adsense account (with her permission of course!). This is good because:
- We get paid while she writes (this is much better than her playing the SIMs)
- We also get a further 10% share of her earnings because I referred her. She therefore earns Adsense from 70% of her impressions while I earn from 60% of mine

Where is the Traffic?
Interestingly, the original Beginners guide to Successful HubPage Writing draws around 70% of my total Hub traffic. This appears to be partly due to linking from other ‘Earning money on the internet’ websites.
If you are new to HubPages and have published a hub then you can log on and view your article and you’ll find a tab at the top ‘VIEW STATS’ – this gives you a graph of your hub traffic against time and an indication of where the traffic has come from.
Traffic to a new hub is initially relatively high. This is because it is heavily featured on the HubPages website (Select ‘HUBS’ from the top-level menu, then select ‘NEW’).
Below is a recent screenshot of the stats for the Beginners guide to Successful HubPage Writing. This gives an indication of the traffic with time and where it is coming from.
What About the CASH?
Traffic is only the first stage in earning actual money.
Amazon Earnings
I've still earned nothing from Amazon. I’ve had around 12 clicks but it is only purchases that pay out (the standard rate is 4% of what is ordered). But that seems to be a fairly common Hubber experience. The forums suggest Amazon money comes in when hub writers have given up any hope of a return.
I read a report on the forums of someone receiving 4% for various items totally unrelated to the ads originally displayed. In other words once someone clicks on your ad they might suddenly decide to roam the Amazon catalogue and spend $50,000. Apparently you still get the 4%.
I’ve not tried Ebay yet but I’ve seen a forum post suggesting some Hubbers find Ebay pays out more than Amazon.
Amazon Tip
I’ve left adverts displayed for relevant books, via the keyword search. As time pases the ads change and the new adverts are usually less relevant. Also if it’s a book, 4% may be hardly worth bothering with.
I’m therefore experimenting with larger value items, not necessarily associated with the hub topic. To make sure the adverts don’t change, find the ASIN (Amazon reference number) on the Amazon site and put this into the Amazon Capsule instead of a keyword. Remember, you only need to sell one Rolex every few years to make Amazon worthwhile!
AdSense Earnings
At the end of Beginners Guide (part 1), my first 12 days of Hubbing, I’d earned nothing. I’ve now set up my AdSense account so I have a separate channel for each Hub.
This means I can see how many people have viewed ads on each page (impressions) and then how many impressions have resulted in a click. Note that the Hubber gets 60% of the impressions while HubPages normally takes 40%, hence the AdSense impressions are lower than the page views on your My Account statistics page.
The impressions to clicks ratio is known as the Click Through Rate (CTR). Generally 9% is considered tops for AdSense even when you have total control over ad placement etc. HubPages forums suggest, with the limitations of AdSense on Hubs, 5% is exceptional. 5% means that for every 100 impressions there are, on average, 5 clicks on the AdSense ads.
So how am I doing in terms of CPM?
- Beginners Guide: 3.08%
- Presentations: 6.67%
- Other 6 hubs: 0%
- RetoTech Blog 1.72%
My payout has recently averaged 50c - $1 a day but is probably much lower over a longer time. Note that the Presentations Hub CTR isn't statistically reliable as the traffic for this hub is low and this is based on a single click. .If you are sensible (unlike me) - Don't check your earnings all the time.

Keywords
One interesting point here is Keywords and the value of clicks. The ads placed on The Beginners Guide (Part 1) relate to writing and writer’s services and these are not particularly high value keywords. You could get a much higher payment per click by writing about more technical issues such as medicine or web technology.
Similarly girls with great boobs may draw traffic (either on HubPages or in the street!) but any clicks will be of relatively low value. Keywords involving the law, the legal profession, or loans and mortgages are worth more (but you obviously need good, relevant content too). The downside, however is that your traffic would typically be lower with high value keywords.
Leave the Question Unanswered?
There is a point of view amongst the more professional Internet earners, and I’m not sure of the ethics of this, that the ideal Adsense article doesn’t provide a complete answer and leaves the reader dissatisfied. It is then left to the Ads to provide the solution.
For example, you might write in your Hub about hair loss and conclude there may not be a simple cure. Obligingly, an Adsense ad might then appear saying ‘Click now for an Instant Cure for Baldness' – In that case you’d probably get a CPM of better than 10%!
If, on the other hand, you said in your Hub that in your neck of the woods, chicken droppings rubbed into the scalp provided an instant cure, male readers would ignore the ad and go looking for the nearest poultry farm.
Please note that this is a fictitious example. Don’t try it!
High Hub Score Doesn’t Equal High Earnings
What interests me are my 6 hubs which have earned nothing. First, I should say that the total traffic is so low over the short time they have been posted that this may not be as bad as it seems. It is quite normal, statistically, to average 4% CPM but get no clicks for 100 impressions or more.
In practice it is easy to see another reason why I’m not getting clicks. For example, my most successful article in terms of Hub score is Budget Airlines. This is often on the top few pages and scoring 100. People obviously like it but it isn’t focused for AdSense.
It is about air travel so the ads are aimed at pilots, aircrew and passengers but the content isn’t really targeted at these people so my readers click the thumbs up but not the ads. The same is true for my quirky articles about the British Navy, toilets and the inventor of the internet. People may enjoy reading them but the articles are not closely targeted to the ads that appear.
The Way Ahead
I’ll not say any more about my blog RetroTech except to reiterate that it is much harder to get the volume and quantity of traffic and the right adverts on a blog than on HubPages.
I have a few doubts about the quality of traffic from somewhere like Stumbleupon. Yes you can generate a sudden massive peak of traffic but I’m not convinced the visitors stick around long or that Stumblers are good Clickers.
- I need to slow down a bit and take stock and see how money side develops
- Improve my existing hubs in terms of better tags, overview paragraphs (making sure tags actually appear in the text as well)
- In time write a hub targeted to Adsense earnings and see if this does better than the non-targeted hubs I've produced so far
- Write the Golden Hub - that gets around 200 impressions a day, has a CTR of 5% and pays $20 a click. In other words it earns $200 a day or just over $70,000 a year (We can all dream!).
No World Cruise Yet
Having said all that about making money - I still believe the prime reason to be on HubPages is to be creative and enjoy writing and there is no shortcut to producing quality, original content.
So far I've found Hubbers old and new fantastically supportive and encouraging. A final thanks to the Hubbing community for all the useful advice contained in Hubs and on the Hub forums.

I like your chicken droppings example!
Thanks for such prompt feedback - I've barely finished writing it! The Internet still amazes me.
I loved the bit on getting kids to write Hubs. We do have an age limit, but it's not a bad idea if you can't sell them on eBay.
Couldn't you have your kids write hubs and you just put them up on your account (after of course making sure their written cognitively)? or is this a violation of tos since "you" didnt write it? it's an interresting idea to get your kids interrested in the art of writing hubs, and when their of age well their seasoned and can see their hubs progress.. I know parents that do this with the stock market software programs.. just an idea to throw out there..
This is an excellent hub very well written, you got me thinking!
Paul - glad you liked it. I'm sure someone somewhere has tried selling them on Ebay by now. Congratulations, by the way, on the way HubPages has evolved and grown during 2007. I found Hubs by accident when I googled something and found a HubPage.
Jerrico I think you made a good point - it could be both educational and encouraging for parents and children to produce a hub together. Or what about a junior school class? You could add some kids drawings too.
great ideas here and great hub.
Hey Rik - great hub, nice layout. The tips are really helpful and fun to read. Even if you're not rolling in the dough, you're sure doing a good job here on Hubpages. :-) Steph
I luv the hub but am too lazy for me
Nice follow up to Part I.
Very useful info. Keep them coming!
Nice hub - thanks for the info and the humourous outlook :-)
Nice hub...very informative with great ideas...I really could use these tips. :)
Thanks for the tips! Not found much money, but it's fun and whoooo yes it would be nice to write the golden hub.......let us know if you do...You need to write " How to write a GOLDEN HUB" :.)
Nice work. I just joined this Hub universe today, and I was amazed at how well-structured your hub is.
Interesting observations!My compliments.Raymond
Thanks for letting us know how you are doing with Adsense. It is interesting to compare my statistics with others. One thing to keep in mind is that because of Hubpages revenue sharing model you are not getting credit for all of the impressions or cliick through rates because some are going to Hubpage's account, so if the same articles were on your own site and you had the same number of visitors, you would likely get better profits. Of course the real question is would you get the same amount of traffic or are the visitors that a popular site can deliver so much better that sharing revenue with them is worth it. This is something I would like to hear about: a comparison or CTR between pages here and similar articles your own blog or website.
Thanks to all for feedback - Quotations good point - I agree with you. Because my blog is new, traffic is very low and have only had one click so HubPages is much more effective in the short term. If I spent time building up traffic to the blog I could potentially make more because there is more freedom to place ads, chose ad styles, colours etc. - I think the best strategy is a mix of Hubpages and personal blogs (quite a lot of expereinced Hubbers seem to chose this model).
An interesting Hub and a very nice use of colorful pictures! Thanks.
Hmmmm.....the "Making Money Online" link doesn't seem to work--at least not on my computer. F.Y.I.
Marcie - thanks for comments - I have fixed link now!
Excellent hub Rik!..I'm glad you already started doing your firt hub. In my case, I haven't decide what to write and where to start. Anyways, good luck on your hub..^^..
Your knowledge impresses me thank you.
I will put my foot in the water and take the first toe immersionm.
Very Informative .Thanks
I always enjoy reading tips and strategies others are using to find success online. As a fairly new member of hubpages, I appreciate the information. It sounds like you've done well with bringing in traffic - now if the money would follow... Your point is very well taken - a high hub score doesn't necessarily equal high earnings. Yet you have to start creating quality content in order to get the traffic, that will hopefully lead to the higher earnings. In addition to gaining from adsense, it also helps to have additional products on your site. If you're not relying solely on one payment, and instead have dozens of potential income sources, you'll do even better.
Very good info you have there. Also it looks like you're doing really well with adsense so far and I like your no definitive answer strategy. By the comments it looks like its been helpful for a lot of people. I have a similar hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/hubpagessuccess
I probly have similar adsense results (you might be doing better there) but I have had significant Amazon earnings too. Its fun to compare results and listen to other people's tips and ideas.
Good thought Lori - I haven't tried Ebay yet
College P - Yes enjoyed your hub - you've obviously got off to a good start with Amazon - Nothing for me so far - Amazon seems less predictable than Adsense - having said that I still sometimes go for days with no Adsense earnings even when my traffic is high.
What a great hub. Very relevant and very intersting.
fun thoughts
As a newbie to HubPages, I found this very informative and useful. Thank you!
Thanks Cristina, Cindy and Kerry for your encouragement.
My earnings have dropped recently - during my first month (January) I made $9 but have only made around $1 this month so far although my traffic is OK. The problem is no one is clicking at the moment. I'm still enjoying the HubPages experience and will probably post a further 'guide' (diary) in the near future.
Good luck with your Hubs.
These hubpages have become the newest "poke me" in my house. Last night I was told I have turned into a computer geek. Yesterday afternoon I heard,"how did I know i would find you at that computer?" I am addicted, I admit. The thing I am finding is that trying to figure out what to do on the AdSense, with Amazon and so on is extremely time consuming. It is taking away from my studio work as well as my hubbing. Articles like this are a big help. Thanks!
I know exactly what you mean! I too am addicted. Glad the article helped. I'm planning part 3 shortly when I've sorted out where I'm going!
Seems like a hard way to make a living at $2.00 a week. In the 90's I wrote for a site called Themestream. It paid ten cents for every view. Some nights I made $15.00 while I slept. I only wrote for them for 6 months but averaged around $600.00 a week. Sadly when the entire internet crashed they went with it.
Mike I agree - the point often made on HubPages that it isn't a source of significant income for most people (certainly not in the US or Europe). I earn far more in a day at work than I would make in a year on HubPages.
The tips and advice here are great. I hope I am not posting this as irrelevant content but can anyone tell me how to get my hub single spaced instead of double or triple spaced. I just cannot figure it out. Thought someone might be able to help. Sorry if this is not appropriate here.
Dgmeyer - not sure what your problem is. Usually if you save the text capsule the formating should sort itself out. You could try posting a message on the forums. there is a section specifically for help with problems and the support team will help if a fellow hubber doesn't come up with a solution.
Good Advice. I came here to learn what a hub is and how to write one, and I have the answer from both your hubs.
Thank you
Many thanks for your encouragement Ladymaggic!
You haven't failed to bring a few chuckles even to my tired self....
Zylla - glad it made you smile and good luck with your own Hubs!
Love this series! Thanks for the help!
02SmithA - Glad you found it helpful - I've been Hubbing 6 months and still find it enjoyable. One encouragement is that traffic gradually increases as search engines kick in and the people who sign up through your Hubs also increasingly add to your income. Now around 70% of my adsense clicks come from signup hubs rather than my own hubs.
am enjoying reading about your hubpages experience. hope it's not another 'get-rich-quick' scheme 'casue we know how they usually go. but being new at this, well, at least i am learning something. good for the old grey matter. thanx! and i love the old flying pictures!
No Dolores, HubPages is definately not a get rich quick scam - my traffic and earnings are gradually increasing - but it takes time and patience! More a 'make more money as time goes by' rather than 'get rich quick'!
GOOD !!THIS IS REALLY INTERESTING AND HELPFUL .will surely apply your hints right now thanx
Roserise - glad you found it useful! Good luck with hubPages.
