Being Stylish on a Budget: Looking Good for Less
67One of the greatest misconceptions about fashion is that it costs money to look good. Everyone has seen examples of how money cannot buy class. The opposite is true as well, you can look like a million bucks without spending that.
Ironically, the most unique pieces you'll find will be inexpensive. Ebay and farmer's markets are two of my favorite places to shop. You will be able to find one-of-a-kind pieces for a fraction of what trendy boutiques will charge. Pay attention to stitching and fabrics. If a price is too good to be true it just might be.
Shopping sales and in the off season is also a great way to find key pieces for not a lot of money. I love shopping for jackets and coats in the summer. Likewise sundresses in the winter. Another bonus: When you pull these items out when the correct season hits it's like you have a whole new wardrobe you didn't just drop the cash on.
Another way to save money on fashion is not buying into the trends. If you do try to buy your pieces at shops like Forever 21 and H&M. Trends only last a season so if you do want to invest money in clothing make sure it's going to be key iconic pieces like a little black dress. Forever 21 and H&M are a goldmine for cute trendy clothes you can wear and then donate.
Pieces to invest in depends on where you live and how you dress. I live in bluejeans and wear them to work daily, so I do invest in cute jeans that look good and last. However, I love shopping for my shoes at Target. They have the most amazing flats and I love their Converse One Star line. You can buy the same converse sneakers at Target that have a cute little star on them for $20 less than the usual price. Coats, if you live in the cold, are another piece not to scrimp on.
I adore Nordstrom's Rack and Off 5th. If you are looking for labels these two stores are perfect. The styles may be last season's so don't go looking for the current trends. But for shoes, lingerie, tights, workout clothes, sweaters and coats (can you tell I love coats?) these stores are great.
Tops, jewelry, and sundresses are all pieces you can find to fit your price point. The major rule is not to be a snob. Who cares if you found a super cute dress at Forever 21? Embrace your taste and not your money.
