Frustrations and how to keep them at bay

People who don't have kids with aspergers seem to have little or no patience with them, even the supposed professionals that work with them on a daily basis. They need to display it even when they run out. These kids can feel even though they don't display their feelings in the same way that the rest of us do.

Trying to find a place to rent is really hard. First you have to find a place that allows children and then you have to make sure that they have a handiman on staff, or get permission to do your own repairs. With these boys something is always getting broken.

Taking them to the playground you get stares and comments from the other parents if your child has a melt down. All the advice they give isn't worth a hill of beans when it comes to these boys. The melt downs may be embarrassing but you just have to deal with each one as they happen.

One of the ways I've found to cut down on meltdowns at home I got from one of their psychologists. I buy those garage sale, dot shaped, stickers that come in three colors pink, yellow, and green and stick them to just about everything in the house, we use them like traffic lights, red i.e. pink means no don't touch, yellow means ask first, and green means yes you can use this - you don't have to ask.

With two of these boys in the house I've also learned to buy two of each toy as they don't seem to be able to handle jealousy well at all. Each boy has a favorite color and thats the color I use for their personal items toothbrushes, combs, water glasses, dishes, sheets, blankets, towels, they are all color coded.

If it's possible buy a hasp and padlock for one closet in your home to keep the things that may be a danger to them, medicines, cleaning supplies, tools, etc....

Their clothing on the has to be stylish, safety concious, and durable, almost an impossiblity, luckily one of my boys loves carharts, The other one likes jeans so I iron, iron on patches inside the knees of new ones for him. That seems to make them last a couple weeks longer. They don't seem to be aware of whats happening with their clothing if they're involved in doing something, so nothing baggy or with parts or pieces that hang loose. No ski hats with strings. No winter scarves that drape. No backpacks that lace up.

To keep the boys minds busy while I grocery shop is to have them do the math, add up the groceries and keep a running tab. Have them figure out how much an item costs per serving and how many servings we need. When we get home I have them put away the dry goods and the canned goods. They like to have things organized your cupboards will look impeccible, everything in rows and organized by type. Then you just have to place the stickers on everything.

Cooking is another matter, now that they're getting older they can help. They read the recipe aloud, measure the ingredients, and help to mix and stir. They've become fascinated with the chemistry aspect of cooking and like to experiment.

Moving in circles can be play too.

I knw a college student at the college where I work with aspbergers. Sometimes I don't know how to approach him for I read on it and I don't want to come across the wrong way. My heart goes out to you for what you deal with being a single mom, does the asperbergers get better as they age?

As long as I keep working with the boys on their behavior issues they get better. I've had them in many therapies all of which have contributed to their growth. I just have to be persistent.
