Being a responsible pet owner means love and care

Before you select your pet whether it be a cat, dog, bird, in fact anything. You need to think about what you want and why you want it.

If you prefer to have a more boisterous pet, then, choose something like a Labrador or blue heeler that you can take for walks, play in the park with. However, at the same time these sorts of dogs need a lot more exercise than other dogs.

If you want something less boisterous, a smaller dog may be suitable. Although a Jack Russell is not the one to choose, because they are very active dogs. A bird may be more suitable for the older person.

I did not choose my pet he was thrust upon me by my son, through no fault of his own. He is a beautiful Blue Heeler. These are classed as cattle or working dogs. These are beautiful and faithful dogs to their master or owners. It is a common fact that they will let you into a property, although they will prevent you from leaving.

At 8 weeks old, I took him to obedience training. That was the best thing I could have done. We learned so many things together. I learned how to train him and he listened to me his new master.

During his early life, he dug holes, he chewed up the foam cushions on my cane lounge, and managed to get into more trouble than you can imagine. I taught him many commands; to retrieve the ball. Sit, drop, and wait He is so clever he gets our shoes, helps bring in the shopping, (especially his own biscuits). When he hears the postal worker's motorbike, he barks so I know and I open the door and together we go to the mailbox. I lift the latch and he stands on back legs and retrieves the mail, and carries it inside. If he is outside with us, and the paper man puts a paper in the mailbox he automatically goes out and brings it in himself without any prompting from us. We can put 5 or 6 biscuits on the floor and say OK 1 and that is all he takes until we say OK then he will have another.

Titan was poisoned on two separate occasions. He had a large lump develop on his neck and they were able to remove it even though it was close to his jugular vein. Apart from these problems, he is healthy. But nothing is too much trouble either for him or for us to look after one another. He even sleeps on our bed. That is right I do not think he knows he is a dog, and to us he is more human than some people that I know.

This is how a responsible pet owner should treat their pet. Treat your dog or pet as one of your children. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water and food every day and they can reach it and not tip it over.

Titan is now 5 years old and I hope we will share many more years with him.

Check out your local Dog Pound, the RSPCA or any local dog refuge or facility that has the awful task of having to put dogs to sleep because their owner decided they could not keep them.

Some of these are beautiful dogs that have not been given any love or care. Give them another chance to be a loving companion to you.  Everyone should train their dog with obedience training.

The rewards will surprise you and are incredible.

This is something you need to think long and hard about.  Everyone deals with pets differently.

Some may like dogs others could be cat lovers.  So if you are thinking of buying someone a pet for a gift, make sure that person really wants it.

Too many pets are left in shelters or strays by people given unwanted gifts.
