Belgrade fortress was and still is one of favorite place of Belgradians from childhood to the late oldness.

Good evening to everyone. First I want to say thank you to all readers for being interested in theme I write, and second to say sorry because I late bit today whit giving you completely new experience in Belgrade, capital city of Serbia.

Given that today was very sunny day in UK, I would say that in Serbia was also similar or maybe even better. That reminded me on park where I spend a lots of years of great time. Even with family or friends, or with colleges from work or academy, or with some of youth "love", Kalemegdan park and fortress gave me perfect place for having some of the best days ever in my life. And for sure I can say, that most of people from Belgrade can say the same!!

The area where is Belgrade fortress now, is beginning of developing Belgrade true the history. It was built in the early 1st century as a stockade with big walls, but true the history its survive a lot of changes. Its developed over the centuries in the Roman Castrum, and then Byzantine castle, than fortified medieval Serbian capital of Despotate, till the and of the Austrian - Ottoman artillery fortress. Today is a museum of the past of Belgrade and Kalemegdan field is a unique cultural and historical complex colled Kalemegdan Park. The fortress is now owned by the state of Serbia and its under protection and direction of "JP Belgrade fortress". It is always open to visitors and historical complex part always opened for them are:

  • Military Museum
  • Heritage Preservation Institute of Belgrade
  • National Observatory
  • Natural History Museum
  • Church Ruzica
  • Church of St. Petka
  • Match
  • Tomb of National Heroes
  • Belgrade Zoo
  • Within the forest is always performed as a small archaeological research and conservation, which is under-construction.

Belgrade fortress is full of the gates and towers all around. Fortress is divided on Up City, Little City and Down City, on which remains we can see how fortress progress through the history. The most preserved from the part of Despots Belgrade time are Despots Gate and Zindan Gate. The other gates, which presents very important and most famous part of fortress are: Stambol Gate (external and internal), Karadjordjes Gate, Clock Gate, Leopold's Gate, Defterderos Gate, King's Gate and West Gate, Vidin Gate, Dark Gate, Gate of Charles VI (incorrectly called Gate Eugene of Savoy and Cornaro's Gate, which is closed by wall now.

Also, towers all around fortress are impressive and must see. Those are: Nebojsa'a Tower, Tower Jaksic, Tower Mlinaric, Despots tower and Clock Tower.

During your guiding all around the Belgrade fortress, don't be hard to yourself and give a rest. Where?? Of course on same place where are you in that moment!!! Whole fortress is surrounded with the largest park in Belgrade, called Kalemegdan. Actually whole that place is at the same time the most important cultural and historical complex! With Belgrade fortress as central part of park and above the Confluence of the Sava and Danube, with Historical Museums all around, Zoo Park.. and most off, with whole green spots with benches for resting filed with residents of city and visitors, all age, Kalemegdan present some kind soul of Belgrade.

The name applies only to the spatial plateau around the fortress which is in XIX century turned on in National Park. In Turkish time it served to observe the enemy and wait for the fight, so it got name from Turkish word KALE which means the fortress and MEGDAN - which means a struggle. However, Turks called that park "the place of thinking" turk. Ficir-bajir.

First remodeling in the park start in 1867. in the order of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic. First concept and sketches for the regualtion of Kalemegdan Belgrade fortress was created by the first urban architect Emilian Josimovic. Greenery is planted between the 1873. and 1875. year, when the Belgrade commanded by Colonel Dragutin Zabaric, former first adjutant of Prince Mihailo. However, planned regulation of Kalemegdan began in 1890 year when the army surrendered Park to the Belgrade municipality. Then mayor of Belgrade Nikola Pasic has approved the first loan for remodeling Kalemegdan and in 1905 its expand into the park called Little Kalemegdan, in the area from the Pavilion Cvijeta Zunzoric to the Zoo Park.

In Kalemegdan again it was not located only museums, pavilions, institutes and other cultural monuments. There are children's amusement park, a not small number of sports playgrounds like for tennis and very popular two basketball teams in Serbia "Red Star" and "Partizan". There are restaurants, coffee shops, counters with a lot of different souvenirs, valued hand work product of grandmothers. Very popular in past couple years (about 10 years at least) are Events organised on basketball playgrounds and other parts of fortress: Urban Experience, Green Bit, Refract festival etc. Definitely this part will be more interesting for younger tourist who love to have excellent experiences on big party festivals with big and famous artist. For sure I will talk more about that in other time.

But what I like when come in park is actually smile of people who are in park and that grannies who doing knit and tat. They make more beautiful and magic entrance: crossing street from the most popular street Knez Mihajlvoa and getting in side of Kalemegdan park and Belgrade Fortress. You see them sitting on benches all around with making new product (hats, scarves, milleas, cloths, blouses, sweaters..), talking with each other, smiling, communicating with tourists, offering their products for not too much big price - and I say for not too much big, because I know how much my grandmother gives her time and imaginations for making the most beautiful things, and I know that they are worth more then they ask for.

Then I come in the some middle of park where on my left side I can go to the fence where can experience the most beautiful view on Danube and Sava, and also on New Belgrade (as name says, the new built part of the city). Then again new experience of performance or some kind of concert in improvised terrassa. But most interesting, at least for me, is that I can watch also grandparents how with big seriousness play Chess all around the terrassa near bench with wonderful view. Again if you sit on some bench just for relax and watch in trees in park, you can meet some squirrel! ;)

To find how to enjoy in park is very simple! Park gives in every meter something interesting and beautiful to see. Give you peace, which in this time all we need very much!
