The creative power of thoughts
The idea that thoughts create reality has gained quite a bit of exposure in recent years. Since I've experienced this philosophy in action several times, I decided to write about why I believe in the creative power of thoughts, what you can do to test this theory out for yourself, and how we can collectively use this knowledge to create a better world.
When I was younger, my parents bought a series of cassette tapes (remember those?) on the power of positive thinking. They eagerly exposed us to these teachings, which I often found to be overly simplistic and lacking in practical advice. Over the years, however, I could see the positive changes taking place in my parents' lives, and I began to realize that perhaps what we think is more important than what we do.
Sychronicity
A few years later, I began noticing a lot of synchronicities in my life, mainly with the number 47, and also through experiences in which I would think about something, or someone, and then have the subject of my thoughts appear shortly after. I generally attributed this to coincidence or latent psychic abilities, but I was energized by these events, because there was something very magical and affirming about them.
Visualization and manifestation
When I was in my early to mid-20s, I learned about a form of Buddhism that involved chanting "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" while envisioning goals or desires. The outcomes of this practice were mind-blowing, as long as my intentions were within the bounds of reason. I quickly learned that I needed to be careful what I wished for, because oftentimes, things would manifest in a different way than I had intended, although they were still technically aligned with my wishes. Eventually, I dropped out of the practice due to the fundamentalist beliefs of some practitioners (you MUST chant this to reach enlightenment!), coupled with the sense that I was abusing my powers for trivial gains, instead of growing spiritually (Buddha would not approve).
Soon afterward, I read a book by Richard Bach called Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah. In the book, the messiah/mechanic leads the protagonist through a visualization exercise involving a white feather, to demonstrate the creative power of thoughts. After reading the book, I took a walk around our community, and when I was approaching our home, I noticed a HUGE white feather propped up against the curb. It was about 2 feet long and looked like it had come off of some type of costume. A few days later, I was telling my story to someone I had met for the first time, and she told me she had also read the book, on a plane ride, and when she came home, she was unpacking her suitcase and a white feather came out!
You may be thinking: "yawn, white feathers are pretty commonplace," but I've tried several visualization exercises since then (including a purple avocado and three elephants), with equally amazing results.
A year or two later, I read Ask and It Is Given, which is a nice beginner's guide for anyone interested in manifestation, and although I was somewhat skeptical, I tested out some of the manifestation exercises: "I'll take a new job, a new car, and a new relationship, please" and within a few months, all three goals had been accomplished. The funny thing is, I wasn't in any rush to get a new car, but a short while after I set forth that intention, my speedometer mysteriously broke, which sped up the process. Even then, I was willing to drag my feet a bit (I'll just drive with the flow...), but the guy I was dating found a great deal on the exact type of car I was looking for (a slightly used, 2004 metallic-colored, Civic hybrid).
I can provide numerous other examples, but my older and wiser sister often reminds me that synchronicities and manifestations are only meaningful for those who experience them, so I hope this will at least encourage nonbelievers to give this a shot.
On life and the afterlife
I believe in reincarnation, and I believe we choose our lives based on the types of lessons we'd like to learn. I think each lifetime is an opportunity to gain an expanded perspective on who we are, why we're here, and our role as creators. I think there is some type of creative, universal power that thought all things into existence (with the help of billions of years of evolution), and each one of us is like a drop in the ocean of this creative power--fragments that reflect the whole. From this perspective, conscious creation makes perfect sense and will help us accomplish what we've set out to do. Even if you don't believe in reincarnation, I hope you'll be willing to test this theory out.
Emotional guidance
One of my favorite theories in Ask and It Is Given relates to our emotional guidance system. Basically, the theory is that bad feelings indicate that our thoughts are out of alignment with what we hope to attract into our lives, while good feelings indicate that we're on the right track. If you remain aware of your emotions, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to slip into a terrible mood over something rather trivial, like the Hummer that just cut you off, or the latest stupid thing that McCain said or did (you're suspending your campaign because of the economy and you want to postpone the debate on foreign policy? REALLY???), when in fact, you have a choice in any situation to either be affected by another person's lack of judgment, or rise above by finding good-feeling thoughts.
A good rule of thumb is "reach for the joy." As my dad used to say when I was younger, much to my chagrin: "Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent." So don't give people that power over you--remember that their garbage has nothing to do with you because you're a kind-hearted, lovely, and wonderful person.
Ready to begin?
The process of intentioning is very simple--simply conjur up the image of what you intend to attract into your life, and imagine how good you will feel when you succeed. In Ask and It is Given, Abraham-Hicks recommend holding the pure, joyful, uncontradicted thought of having or achieving your goal for 68 seconds. You can also add affirmations about why the universe (or God, or whatever creative power you believe in) will support you in manifesting your desire, and how you will feel when it comes into your life. The most important aspect of the process is how you feel--it's best to be joyful and appreciative for the opportunity to engage in co-creation with the universe, rather than feeling a sense of lack, frustration, or fear of failure.
The next two steps are even easier: let go of the desire to control how and when your intention will manifest, and accept the gift when it comes to you.
Practice makes perfect
There's a lot of pain and uncertainty in the world today as a result of greed, dishonesty, and destructive behaviors. I believe that as we gain a greater appreciation for the power of our thoughts, we can collectively envision a world of greater equity, balance, justice, truth, peace, and love. Amazing things can be accomplished when like-minded people work together to improve society, and I hope that as you practice this type of intentioning, you'll find that life will deliver opportunities for meaningful action.

Oh my god Melissa! I was born in 19"47"!
I guess you were serious about elaborating on the coincidence Hub.
You may very well be onto something. I don’t know. I have been trying to manifest world peace, equality and prosperity for around fifty years now. I guess I’m just not doing it right.
The only area in which I seem to have any luck with visualization is health and healing.
When I’m sick or injured I visualize emergency maintenance crews being rushed to the scene of the crisis. I try to relate this to what little I know about human physiology so I can make sure the crews are working with the right materials.
Sometimes this seems to work remarkably well. Apparently I was actually able to relieve a pinched cervical nerve by visualizing a work crew removing excess calcium from a foramen in a vertebra of my neck. What had been a chronic problem for several years went away and has never returned.
I was told that the narrow foramen was a skeletal anomaly. I started thinking about osteoporosis which involves the loss of calcium and the weakening of bones. I reasoned there must therefore be a mechanism within the human body which can remove calcium and all I had to do was apply it to that specific location. It seems to have worked.
I suppose it might not work with regard to money or needless material possessions because of the simple fact that I actually abhor money and people who worship it. There are many “things” I could care less about.
Peace and enlightenment for humanity however is something I desire more passionately than words can convey.
Thanks for the comments!
VioletSun, I'm glad you enjoyed reading this. :) I did write this partially in hopes of encouraging skeptics to give this a try, and partially to remind myself about the importance of maintaining focus on how I would like things to be, rather than getting angry about stupidity, greed, and violence. I like what you added about creating from the inside out. It's amazing how much our perception of reality is determined by our perception of ourselves. Thanks for your insights!
ColdWarBaby--very cool! My dad was also born in 1947, so you're in good company. :) Barack Obama turned 47 on my birthday this year, and when I was writing this hub, as soon as I had written the part about that number, I glanced at the clock and it was 4:47... I could bore you with more examples, but I won't. :)
I'm right there with you regarding your attempted manifestations, but I would suggest that perhaps we haven't maintained a single-pointed focus on how we would like things to be instead of focusing on less promising subjects, like how the world will end and the evils of capitalism. :) Also, I've read that it takes about 1 percent of any population with a shared focus to bring about massive change. There was a neat thought experiment in Washington DC a few years ago that involved a large number of people meditating on peace to reduce the crime rate: http://www.istpp.org/crime_prevention/ So, it is possible, it will just require more and more people to focus on our desired results without giving at least as much focus to all the problems in the world... a difficult feat, for sure!
I would say that health and healing may be the most essential area in which you could hope to apply the power of visualization, and it's inspiring to read about the successes you've had! In response to your thoughts on materialism, I believe too much focus in mainstream literature and movies has been placed on using manifestation for monetary gain. Yes, money can be used to do good things, and can help improve the quality of your life to a certain extent, but it is ultimately a means to an end and should never be regarded as an end in itself--so I think it's most important for people to focus on how they would like their world to be, and the role they hope to play in that paradigm, and then the details will work themselves out. Thanks for adding to the discussion!
Hi Melissa,
I very much enjoyed the way you expanded on the theme of your earlier hub. As I said in my comment to that hub, these are familiar concepts, and it's very interesting to observe how things just fall into place once you begin to direct your focus. I have great faith in the power of positive thought.
A good friend of mine has terminal cancer. Four years ago she was told that she had only a matter of weeks left, but she refused to believe it. She had too much to live for. She is now on the final downhill slide of her illness, but for over three years she actually carried on pretty much as she always had. She knew it would get her in the end, but her sunny personality and great sense of humour have kept her going, far longer than anyone might have expected.
I believe that anyone can work miracles if they can only stay positive and focussed.
Wonderful hub, Melissa - isn't it incredible what the mind can do? I've had it happen to me all my life - these inexplicable strokes of good fortune - doors opening when you never expected them to - and vibrating to certain numbers.
I think anyone can 'avail' of these blessings but it does make it much easier to reach out for them when you've had a secure and happy family environment - that comes through in whatever you write :)
Thank you for sharing, Amanda. Reading about your friend actually gave me the chills. I'm sorry to hear that she's nearing the end of her life, but it sounds like she's accomplished great things and I wish her the best on the journey ahead.
Speaking of the chills, I often wonder about the mechanisms by which that occurs. It's not a feeling you can produce at will, but when something strikes you as incredibly profound, inspiring, or mysterious, it's as if your system does a mini-recalibration to process the new information. Quite interesting. :)
Reading about her story is a great affirmation of what I generally believe but sometimes lose sight of. Yet, it is truly amazing what we can accomplish through focus and positive thinking.
Thanks for your comment!
Thank you, Shalini! Very nice to hear that you've had similar experiences. :) Joseph Campbell has a quote that goes something like: follow your bliss and doors will open where there were no doors before, and I think that's a great reflection on how the universe works when you set your intentions and hold a space of good-feeling thoughts.
And yes, I've been blessed with very loving and wise parents and sisters, which make things a lot easier. :)
I absolutely agree whatever a human mind can concieve it can achieve. I have seen a documentary where a person suffering from cancer was focusing on divine white energy flowing through his body and clearing the malignant cancer cells. It's a miracle which even doctors don't have an answer. Truly a case of mind over matter. Great hub. I loved another hub by terenceyap on reincarnation. You ought to check it out.
Thank you, countrywoman! I've heard similar stories about people curing their cancer through visualization exercises. It's remarkable to think about how powerful our minds are, and how little we understand about the connection between thoughts and reality.
Thanks for the hub recommendation! I had started reading that hub at some point in the past, and never finished it, so I'm glad you reminded me!
Very positive hub and I am sure your advice will go along way for those who need some guidance. Wish I could say more, but all I can say for now is good job.
Thanks, SweetiePie! I appreciate the positive feedback. :)
Thank you for this hub, visualisation IS working, and is extremely effective. Power of our mind is amazing...It works much better after more practising, of course. Our life is just expression of our visions, we materialize what we see with our eyes, or with our inner visions. In my life is working that very well and I am very grateful for that...
I also adore Richard Bach and Illusions, it is so inspiring book, as well as your great article.
Thank you for your positivity...it is helping us all. Love and Light.
Thank you for the very kind words, Tatjana-Mihaela. :) I hope more people will focus on creating a future of peaceful coexistance, and help us move in that direction. :) Love, light, and blessings to you!
Hi Melissa!
Just recently I have been attracted to this kind of thinking after reading, Happiness in a Nutshell where a quote says, "You can change a thought". It got me thinking of the possibility that I too can learn to be happy at any given circumstances. I put this on practice when my boyfriend left me, I opted to think possitively and I had that glow in my face and felt that the universe was coinsiding with my thoughts. I was thinking that I really have no reason to be sad because the future holds a promise. I went on a date with my eight year old son with little money. Can you believe that a friend sent me money on my bank for shopping? I was happy and my son was happy.
I got even more interested in learning more about it. I signed up for, "The Law Of Attraction" and got a free ebook on Detachment and Attachment. I wish I had known this a long time ago. I will practice more and do my research.
It's a nice blog. I can relate and I learned as well. Thanks girl.
Hi Sheena,
Thanks for your comment! I'm happy to hear that book helped you focus on the positive after your break-up. I felt a similar sense of freedom and possibility after my last relationship ended, and my life has continued to improve since then. I'm glad you had a chance to spend some quality time with your son, also. :)
If you're interested in the law of attraction, I recommend the book Ask and It Is Given--I wrote a hug about it and ColdWarBaby was kind enough to provide a link to a copy of the book online, in case you'd like to check it out. Here is a link to the hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/Ask-and-It-Is-Given and if the book sounds interesting to you, you can find a link to the online version in the comments.
And yes, the more we practice and research these topics, the better of we'll be.
Keep glowing!
Melissa, instinctively I've known what you are talking about since my childhood, I just did not have the language to define my thinking. Lately I have been reading about manifestation, affirmation, conscious living and it all make sense to me.
I'm currently on a path toward my true passion and it all came about because of affirmation and manifestion principles and practices.
I was thinking of exploring the notion of reincarnation in fiction as I was not, still not sure how to explain it or maybe I'm still fighting with my christian upbringing about this matter.
Thanks for shedding some light on some very relevant matter of our collective unsconscious.
I have a gift card for Chapters and so now I know what I'll be buying to read...
Thanks

Melissa: If there are skeptics about the ability that we all have in manifesting, perhaps reading your article will get them to try and experiment with creating.
What is going on inside of us is crucial when manifesting and also for our spiritual growth. We may chant, " I am rich" but if we do not feel worthy, we manifest what we are feeling within. The world as we know, is created from the inside out.
This was a very well written hub and which I truly enjoyed reading.
