Belize – Caye Caulker versus Caye Ambergris
68Belize is a great country to visit for relaxation and diving especially. The second largest coral reef in the world is located off the coast of Belize. It is accessible from Caye Caulker and Caye Ambergris.
To get to either of these cayes, you will likely fly into Belize City. Belize City is not much for tourism, beauty or safety - you will want to move on to your final destination. You will either have a connecting flight to Caye Ambergris or you can take a water taxi to either of the cayes. Depending on your arrival time, the last water taxi may have already departed requiring you to stay one night in Belize City before the next morning's departure. Spending one night in Belize City is not the end of the world especially if you are on a budget and you do not want to spring for the connecting flight to Caye Ambergris. Caye Caulker is about 45 minutes by water taxi and Caye Ambergris is about an hour water taxi.
Both islands provide classic beach ambience such as open air "restaurants" made up of a grill, four posts with a tarp and picnic tables. Enjoying fresh lobster with your feet in the sand drinking a Belikin beer, Belize's national beer, is an excellent way to end a day. You can also spend time sitting on a pier watching sting rays glide by on either caye - the water is that clear and unspoiled.
Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker is a very small island with sand "roads," little or no motorized vehicles and three main "roads" - the front, middle and back. You can walk to everything you will need including town and the diving center - Frenchie's. Accommodations are plentiful and include bed and breakfast-type establishments.
Frenchie's provides great diving excursions, including The Blue Hole, an inverted limestone formation. For divers, The Blue Hole is a must see. Frenchie's services include stopping at Half Moon Caye to visit a booby rookery on a virtually uninhabited island. Diving and beach activities offer plenty of diversions for a relaxing vacation. For more action, check out Caye Ambergris.
Caye Ambergris
Caye Ambergris is more touristy and offers more infrastructure - golf carts are a general mode of transportation. This caye is also larger and busier, but with more activities and shops. Caye Ambergris activities are more varied than Caye Caulker and include archaeological sites and numerous water sports and activities.
