Choosing bench cushions for seating in your home is not as difficult as it may seem. There are some things to consider and then you can get the job done quickly and easily.

Indoor or Outdoor

People need bench cushions for both inside and outside benches. When deciding on your cushions, you need to consider this first. Do you need the fabric in the cushions to be inside/outside fabric? In other words, do you need it to be weather proof? Is your bench seat indoors or on a deck or porch that is situated outside? Maybe it's in a gazebo! There are fabrics available that are coated to protect them from sun fading them and rain damaging them. It is usually more expensive to have this type of fabric than regular indoor fabric.

Fabrics

When selecting a fabric, regardless of if it is for inside bench cushions or outside bench cushions, you should choose good quality fabric with a thickness that is substantial. Upholstery weight fabric is a good idea. Good quality fabrics will help it last against wear for a longer period of time. Every now and then, you may even like to flip the cushions so that any wear is spread out. By the time it begins to show wear, you may be tired of the pattern and want something different anyway! That may be your hint to get some new bench cushions!
Fabric designs for bench cushions can be either busy or subtle. Personally, I would go with something relatively plain and then use accent pillows or other objects in the room to create pattern and personality. It is much easier and cheaper to change throw cushions and a lamp than a custom-made bench cushion. Stripes or plain fabrics would be a good choice. You could also go with a plaid or a floral print. I would be careful not to make it too loud of a print. You may get sick of it. Make sure you really like the colours too!

Cushion Foam

Cushion foam is available in so many different densities, thickness and weights. You can get memory foam or regular foam. But be sure you get a good quality foam. The basis for a good cushion is the foam. If you choose the cheap stuff, you will be sorry if you end up getting lots of lumps in it after people have been sitting on your new bench cushions.

Make Your Own Bench Cushions

If you are sewing inclined, or know someone who is, then half the battle is done for you... so to speak. You will still have the work of making the cushions themselves, but you will have more freedom in your fabric selection. If you can't make them yourself, you have two choices: buy ready-made bench cushions or find someone to custom make them for you. You will need to do a little research to find someone to custom make them. Ask around with friends to see if they have someone to recommend. Go to some furniture stores to see if they have an upholstery person to recommend, and do a search online.

Good luck in choosing bench cushions for seating in your home. I hope this has been useful to you.
