Well, we don't have Robert Redford, but Bend, Oregon does have an independent film festival that may someday give Sundance a run for its money! Plus, Bend is just as beautiful (if not more so) than Park City, Utah, and way less crowded. In its fifth year this fall, the BendFilm festival is a popular attraction for tourists and residents alike. This year's event will be held Thursday, October 9, 2008 - Sunday, October 12, 2008 right in historic downtown. As of the date of this publication, filmmakers can officially submit their work for consideration at the 2008 festival.

In 2006, the BendFilm Festival featured more than 70 independent films, shown on four different screens. In addition to movies, attendees can enjoy filmmaking lectures, and other special events. There are plenty of parties to go along with the festive atmosphere. Drawing thousands of alternative film enthusiasts, this year's event may top over 18,000 attendees. Not bad for a town of only 75,000!

Among the four main venues, is the fabulously renovated historic Tower Theatre on downtown Wall Street. Take a step back in time, while enjoying avant guard fare. Overall, the event is a favorite of movie buffs and artists alike. The street scene buzzes with gossip and casual criticism of the films being shown. Its one of the best four days for the town each year.

Movies shown at the festival are not your typical Hollywood fare. Although its still in its infancy, BendFilm is attracting unique alternatives to mainstream entertainment, and very enthusiastic participants. Films are accepted in the following categories:

  • Narrative Features
  • Documentary Films
  • Short Films
  • Short Film Programs
  • Studen Films
  • IndieKids
  • BANTER panel discussions

Attendees can purchase passes in advance of the festival, at a range of levels depending on the events you wish to see. For example, a "Wall to Wall" access pass is $250, and gives you priority admission to all films, entry to the Opening Night Party and the Awards party. An "Insomniac" pass is only $60 and allows you admission to all movies that start after 9:00 p.m. and before noon during the festival.

The majority of tickets are sold at the door, with long lines stretching out down the streets. Disappointed patrons may be turned away when a show is sold out. Your best bet is to either buy a pass or get in line early! Members can purchase tickets online nearly 2 weeks before the general public. Individual tickets to each show are $9.

You can become a BendFilm member for as little as $50 ($30 for those under 25 or over 65). Donations are tax deductible to the extent they exceed benefits received from being a member (thank you gifts, etc).

While staying in Bend, you can shop some of the fantastic boutiques in historic downtown, or venture over to the Old Mill District, where you'll find Victoria's Secret, White House/Black Market, the Gap, Ann Taylor Loft, and many more mainstream stores. Dining out in town is a real treat! Rumor is that there are more restaurants per capita here, than anywhere else in the country! Believe me, I have tried plenty of them, and there is a wide selection in food, fare and value.

This annual event is gaining in popularity and recognition. How about coming to BendFest this year, so you can say you were there when....
