Beginners Guide For Learning About RSS Feeds
RSS Feeds are one very important part of any website or blog. RSS Feeds are what people will subscribe to when they want to learn more from your website or blog. No other aspect of your site will be as beneficial to you as a quality RSS Feed.
Do you have a RSS Feed on your website or blog? Many webmasters and bloggers think that a website without a RSS Feed is not worth surviving. I'm one of those people, and I can assure you if you do not have a RSS Feed, you will have a hard time gaining subscribers and getting returning visitors back to your site. Why? Because there is nothing for your site visitors to subscribe to. Sure, they can follow your updates on Twitter or Facebook. But nothing compares to the benefits of a good quality RSS Feed.
What is a RSS Feed?
RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication'. It's basically a XML feed which is delivered to your subscribers preferred way of reading your blog posts, or your new website content.
Readers are able to subscribe to your RSS Feed through many different options which include Microsoft Outlook, Google Reader, and of course good old fashioned email. As well as over 50 other RSS Feed readers.
Will It Benefit My Visitors?
Will it benefit your basic one time visitors through Google, no. But your success from your RSS Feed will be when you have gained your visitors trust, and when your visitor is truly interested in your content on your website or blog. If you have good quality content on your site, and you promote your RSS Feed throughout many different spaces on your site, you have the chance of getting many RSS subscribers.
RSS Feeds will benefit your visitors with one major reason. They do not have to visit your site every time new content is added. Your visitors don't need to bookmark your site and keep checking back everyday to see if there is new content. Many people will forget about your site if they just bookmark it and check back every few days, people will get tired of having to check back, and eventually eliminate your site from their favorites.
On the other hand, RSS Feeds will be available for your subscribers and they can subscribe to your Feed through many different methods. And the benefit is that they will always read every one of your articles/posts. It will be pushed in their face thanks to their RSS reader. They will never forget about your site because they see it everyday in their RSS reader!
How Do I Create My RSS Feed?
There are many options for creating your RSS Feed through your blog. Both Blogger and WordPress (among others) create your RSS Feed for you. All you need to do is get a good publishing tool to make it easier and nicer looking for your subscribers. I suggest using a free service called FeedBurner. FeedBurner is a free service through Google, and they offer a great publishing tool to make your RSS Feed more attractive.
Also, FeedBurner makes it easier to promote your RSS Feed thanks to many different widgets and little buttons among among other things. Also, my favorite option about FeedBurner is their options to monetize your Feed. Because Google own FeedBurner and AdSense, they allow you to place AdSense on your FeedBurner RSS Feed. What can be better?
Creating a RSS Feed for your website will be more of a challenge, however, with a basic XML editor you can easily create a RSS Feed. Basically you need to create a Feed through your XML editor, upload it
to your root website directory (where .index is located), then publish
it and create a custom Feed address for it. For Step by step instructions for creating a RSS Feed for your website you can visit my blog for more instructions.
I suggest everyone who does not have a RSS Feed yet on their website or blog, create one NOW! It's a must have resource on your site, and it's a sign of a good quality website or blog.
