Benefits of Glucosamine for your Body

Glucosamine is a natural compound found in the body, made from glucose and amino acid glutamine. Production of this lessens with aging.

So many people now suffer from Osteoarthritis, which is a type of arthritis. Our aging and even some young people suffer from the breakdown of cartilage in our spine and joints. Cartilage is a substance, which acts as a cushion between our moving bone disks and joints.

This will affect millions of people at some time during their life. It may affect the hands, spine, knees, and the feet. There are many different types of arthritis conditions although osteoarthritis is more common. The water content of our cartilage increases, causing the protein to degenerate as we age.

Other Uses for Glucosamine

Glucosamine is used for rheumatoid arthritis, chronic venous insufficiency, skin disorders and bowel disease or Crohn's disease.

Side effects from Overuse of Glucosamine

Many studies on humans find short terms use of glucosamine is okay. Long-term use could affect some people in various ways. These could include headache, insomnia, and drowsiness. Some of these temporary digestive conditions are abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Allergies

If you are allergic to shellfish, then you should avoid taking glucosamine as some supplements are made from shellfish. Not all products print exactly what's in the products when manufactured.

There is also some evidence, which suggests that glucosamine, in doses used to treat osteoarthritis, could worsen the blood sugar, insulin, and hemoglobin. Therefore, it could increase the risk of bleeding.

Excellent - I have just taken Glucosamine for arthritis for six weeks and it had no effect at all. I was glad to read your hub though because it answered a lot of my doubts. I shall now have to try something else !

Strangely enough Choice did an expose on this subject last night on ChNNAL TWO.

They said you are better off taking a placibo. It was of no use what so sever.

I rang a close friend of mine at about 8.00 Am and he has been taking for about four years and believes it helps him tremendously?Where do you go from here/ I do not know.

Mr Marmalade, I believe if it works for you then take it. There is nothing worse than suffering bad pain all the time. But I still think you may be best to contact your doctor

We have been taking it for years, but have stopped now to have a break. And we will just have to wait and see. We also take fish oil capsules each day.
