Blood Clots

It is not exactly a secret that smokers have higher risk of getting a blood clot than non-smokers.

Smokers, on average, develops a heart attack 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. Blood clots in heart and brain are some of the major causes of sudden and unexpected death. In general, blood clots happpen around two to four times more frequently among smokers than among nonsmokers

The good news is that it is easy to handle - and that it is never too late. It just takes a cessation.

If you stop now, the risk of blood clots are already reduced tomorrow. And after 1-2 years the risk of blood clots halved.

It takes, however, ten years before the risk is the same as for a non-smoker. So the sooner you stop, the better.

Do you already have had a blood clot, then it is, if possibly, even more important that you stop smoking. For the same applies here - you will, in a relatively short time, reduce your risk significantly for it to happen again.

Lung cancer is the major killer

One in every tenth average smoker and almost one in five heavy smokers (a consumption of at least 15 cigarettes per day) will die of lung cancer. In comparison, only 0.5% of those who have never touched a cigarette, cancer of the lungs.

There is a clear link between lung cancer and the number of cigarettes a person exposes themselves to. The more cigarettes you smoke per day, and the more years you've smoked - the more likely you are to get lung cancer.

A rule of thumb says that 10 cigarettes increased the risk risk, 20 twenty cigarettes increases the risk 20 times and so on.

So far, quitting is the only effective prevention of lung cancer. After 5-10 years the risk of getting lung cancer is halfed, and after 15 years, the risk is reduced by about 10 times.

In a heavy smoker, it means that he / she goes from 20 times greater risk of lung cancer as a non-smoker, to only twice the risk. Another major reason to stop smoking.

Other forms of cancer

Apart from lung cancer are a number of other types of cancer also more common in smokers. These include:

  • Cancer of the larynx
  • Cancer of the oral cavity
  • Cancer of the throat
  • Cancer of the esophagus
  • Cancer of the pancreas
  • Bladder cancer
  • Cervical cancer


These cancers account for 15000 tobacco-related deaths each year.

Other health benefits of smoking cessation

Besides reducing the risk of blood clots and cancer, there are also a number of other significant health benefits to stop smoking - and some of them you will feel it immediately.

Already after one day, you will have more blood in the skin, leaving heat in the toes and fingers. And after three days you are breathing more easily. In the course of a week or two, your taste and smell have improved markedly.

The next year after a smoking cessation, you will notice that your skin is given a fresher color, and the rapid aging of the skin has stopped.

You feel more fresh and probably you also sleep better. Your breathing has become even easier, and you have less cough.

If you try to get pregnant, it is also worth noting that a cessation provides greater fertility. So there is no reason to wait a quit until you have become pregnant.
