Who is Bernard Hopkins

Bernard Hopkins is an american boxer, he was born in January 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

As a youth

Bernard Hopkins had a troublesome childhood. At the age of seventeen he was sentenced to eighteen years in prison for nine felonies. He discovered boxing while in prison and after only serving five years of his 18 year sentence, he was released from prison.


Professional Career

He would start his career in 1988 with a loss to Clinton Michell, but regain composure shortly after with a win over Greg Paige in 1990. For years after Hopkins would win over twenty consecutive matches. In 1993, his first chance for a title would be the IBF middleweight championship against Roy Jones Jr., he would lose this match although. In 1994, Segundo Mercado would be his second chance for this belt, this match would be a draw. In 1995, Hopkins and Mercado would have a rematch and Hopkins would win this and become world champion. In 2001, he would face Keith Holmes for the unification belt and win. Later this year he would hand WBA champion Felix Trinidad the first loss of his career and become the undisputed middleweight champion. In 2004, he would win against Oscar de la Hoya thereby unifying all four middleweight belts.

Later Professional Career

In 2003, Hopkins would lose his championship to Jermain Taylor and also lose in a rematch. In 2006 he would beat Antonio Tarver. In 2007, he would win against Ronald "Winky" Wright. In his latest fight in 2008 he would lose against Joe Calzaghe. His record in total is 55 fights, 48 wins, 32 by way of knock with 5 losses, 1 loss and 1 no contest.
