The Bernese Mountain Dog is a special class of dog with many little things that are unique just to this breed. Originating in the Swiss Alps, Bernese Mountain Dogs were originally excellent farm dogs, proficient at protecting livestock and property as well as herding animals. They were also used by weavers as draft dogs, pulling merchandise to market. They were brought over to North America first in the early 1900’s, but not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club until 1936.

If you are the owner of a Berner, then you know most of the small things that make this breed so extraordinary. For instance, they love to sit on your feet, with their back against your legs, and put their head up and look into your eyes. It’s just a Berner thing, I guess.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are great for outdoor activities, even in the cold winter. Under their outer coat of hair, they have a thick feathery-like coat close to the skin to help keep in their body heat and keep the cold out. You can train your Berner to pull a cart, and in the winter, they are able to pull a sleigh for a few small children, adding to the winter fun! Be careful of summer activities, however, as your dog may become over-heated quickly. Bernese Mountain Dogs are fantastic with children, and love to play and romp around with them in any season.

There are some things unique about Bernese Mountain Dog training as well that can help you in your coaching endeavours. Berners have somewhat of a short attention span, so try to keep your lessons short and exciting. It may take a while for your dog to catch on to some new ideas, but patience and perseverance will help your Berner to catch on and become very obedient. Remember also that Bernese Mountain Dogs respond best to positive training, not punishment. Reward the good behaviour instead of punishing the bad. Using treats and belly-rubs are both effective methods.
