The word strimmer is a combination of two words, string and trimmer. A strimmer is therefore a string timmer s-trimmer - do you see? The strimmer is a handheld machine with a nylon strimmer line encased within a rotating motorised head on the end of a long shaft or handle. The motor turns the strimmer line very fast so that it becomes straight and stiff despite being flexible when motionless. In fact the strimmer line becomes so stiff and travels with such speed that it quite easily cuts grass and even wooded matter. They are perfect for keeping the awkward areas of your garden lawn in trim.
A strimmer essentially can reach parts of your garden that your lawn mower can't reach. It provides the finishing touches to your grass cutting program slicing through tufts of grass around trees and flowerbeds, straightening uneven edges along a driveway, and strimming stretches of lawn your mower or tractor simply can’t fit into.
There are essentially two types of strimmer, the electric strimmer and the petrol engine powered strimmer.
The Electric Strimmer
The electric strimmer has the advantage of being very light, very easy to move around and generally very flexible. However they have two principal drawbacks. Firstly they are restricted by the length of the power cord which for large gardens can be a real problem. However, with multiple extension cables this problem can probably be overcome fairly easily. Secondly they are not as robust as the petrol engine powered strimmer and can struggle with jobs in the garden which are perhaps more densely overgrown that normal. In essence the electric strimmer is the quick, convenient and effective way to tackle all straightforward strimming jobs in your garden.
In recent years, battery operated models of the electric strimmer have been brought out essentially to overcome the issue noted above of cable length. Inevitably however, the battery powered strimmer is slightly handicapped by being heavier and more cumbersome, essentially due to the size and weight of the battery.
Great strimmer manufacturers to look at include Bosch, Flymo and Black and Decker.
The Petrol Engine Strimmer
This type of strimmer tends to be larger than the typical electric strimmer. As intimated above the petrol engined strimmer is essentially a more professional than amateur piece of equipment. It is more robust than the electric strimmer, but at the same time, due to its size and additional power it tends to be significantly heavier and less manoueverable.
One of the advantages of the petrol engine strimmer is that the strimmer line can often be interchanged with a metal blade which is a signficant benefit when dealing with those particularly over-grown areas of your garden.
How To Choose Your Strimmer
You do not have to spend a great deal of money on your strimmer. In deciding you should consider the terrain of your garden, the size of area your garden mower is unlikely to be able to cope with and the distance the strimmer area is from your power source.
You should also consider who will use your strimmer in the garden. The petrol engine strimmer is really quite cumbersome and heavy and it may well be that whoever intends to use the strimmer may not be able to cope with its size and weight.
Finally, these garden machines can be quite noisy so it is well worth using ear muffs.
In conclusion the garden strimmer is a versatile trimming and edge cutting machine and every serious gardener should not be without one.
