The Best Movies, TV Shows and Educational Programmes on DVD for Toddlers

As a parent I find it's useful to have a few of the best DVDs for toddlers that your child can watch and enjoy. Most parents don't want their toddler to sit in front of the TV all day. However, there are times when a parent/carer needs to get something done or needs a break. My 2 year old son has a selection of DVDs and on average he watches about 1/2 of TV a day. Watching DVDs is slightly better than just putting on the TV as a child will become familiar with the language used and it can help improve vocabulary a little. .Movies that are suitable for toddlers can also be entertaining for parents and carers too so you can sit down and watch them together. This can spark of conversations and you can talk together about the movie you are watching. Here are a selection of the best movies for toddlers, the best TV shows on DVD for toddlers and the best educational DVDs for toddlers.

The Best Toddler Movies

My son first watched Wall-e when he was about 20 months and absolutely loved it. There is little speaking at the first part of the film and it is very easy to follow and my son was absolutely mesmorised. He was fascinated by Wall-e and Eva for a long time and used to ask to see the movie a lot.

Cars is a movie my son really loves at the moment and he is 2 and 4 months. It tells the story of a can Lightening McQueen who on the way to the most important race of his life ends up in the small town of Radiator Springs. Here, he meets lots of characters who teach him that there are more important things in life than winning a race. The plot line is simple to follow for toddlers but entertaining enought that the whole family will enjoy this film. It's not just a film for little boys. There are girl characters in the film too to appeal to little girls.

Finding Nemo is another film that toddlers will love but the whole family can sit down and enjoy it as well. The animation is colorful and very eyecatching for small children too.

My son enjoyed Monsters Inc when he first watched at around 2 year old. However, he was scared by the first small part of the film and came to sit next to me so younger children may prefer one of the other options.

These three DVDs are my 2 year old son's favorites so this is why I have included them. Like all 2 year old boys he loves Thomas the tank engine. He watches the DVDs but he also loves the books. Bob the Builder is another of his favorites

My favorite of the three is Peppa Pig and my son loves this too. It is so simple yet funny and cute. The first time I watched it really made me laugh to hear the pigs snorting. The dialogue and vocabulary is very clear and simple and my son picked up the words from watching this very quickly. The episodes are 5 minutes each so are perfect to put on when you need to make a quick phone call or do something quickly without having your toddler clued to the TV. I would recommend this DVD from about 18 months up.
