There are numerous GPS for cars on the market today. There are models for your car, boat, motorcycle, or even portable hand-held models. How can you determine which GPS is the best, most approporate, and therefore right for you?

One way to check is to see which brands are the biggest sellers. The three best selling manufacturers of GPS for cars are Garmin, Tomtom, and Magellan. All threee of these manufacturers have many models from which to choose. Each of these models has varying levels of sophistication and extra gadgets.

Your budget can certainly be a contributing factor as to which GPS you should consider buying. There are models available under $100. Most of the models are in the $100 to $250 range. There are more sophisticated models in the $250 to $500 price range. Ther are very high end models selling for well over $1,000. Many of these models are in-dash models similar to those that come as factory installed versions available as optional eqipment on new cars theses days.

Some basic features that you need to consider are brightness of the screen, size of the screen, how long the battery life is on the model, and whether it is portable or permanently affixed to the car or other vehicle.

Some of the advanced features that you might find on some models include real time traffic conditions. This is a great option which allows you to see where the bottlenecks are in your commute and how to reroute yourself around them. This option requires that the buyer purchase a monthly subscription. This feature is typically available in the $250 to $500 price range models.

Some of the lower end models do now have audio systems which tell you the directions out loud. This can be problematic as it would force you to look at the screen far more often than might be safe for you. You should try to make certain that the model of GPS that you purchase has audio capabilities. This should be considered a required feature, not an optional one.

When looking to purchase GPS for cars, motorecycles, boats, or handheld, you should compare the options, price, and features. If you stick with the three main manufacturers, you should be able to find a GPS model that's right for you.
