Microtech Currahee Fixed Blade

The Microtech Currahee is one of the larger survival knives on my list of favorites. It was originally designed for Navy Seals as a combat knife. I am sure it performs more than admirably in the combat arena. As for a survival knife, it may be the perfect blade.

Let's start with the handle. Made the perfect size for medium to large hands, the handle is big enough that when you use it for an extended period of time, you hand doesn't cramp up from trying to hold onto something too big or too small. The handle has slight finger contours which give you a nice solid grip. It has a light texture all over it which give you a great grip in wet or dry conditions. As you hold it, you know this is a serious survival knife. At the base of the handle, there is a slot through which you can slide a lanyard. In most survival situations you probably won't be wearing a molle system but the handle has three round spots on each side so you can just stick your blade right on your molle vest and the hook and loop spots hold it there while you work with your hands.

The blade is made of thick D2 tool steel. At the base of the blade spine there is nice, deep jimping which gives your thumb a bunch of gripping power. It seems to be at the perfect spot so your hand feels very natural as you hold this knife and place your thumb on the jimping. The thick blade gives it tons of strength for those tough jobs you may demand of it in a survival situation. Think of Bear Grylls--he doesn't hold back. This is the type of knife I can imagine him really liking. The blade length is plenty long to do whatever you need to.

Finally, the knife comes in one of the best sheath systems I have ever used. You can strap this on a belt, on your leg, whereever. The sheath is very solid ballistic nylon and has a ton of nice little features. Two straps that snap your blade handle in place instead of just one. It also has a small pocket where you can store a sharpening stone or some other small piece of equipment that you want to have at all times.

The Microtech Currahee comes in a bunch of different variations. You can get it with or without serrations, in a bunch of different colors and camo patterns, and you can even get it with a double sided blade. Whichever variation you like, I would suggest getting one of these for your knife collection. One thing I know, if I am ever lost in the woods, I want my Currahee fixed blade with me.

SOG Team Leader (Duratech 20CV) Fixed Blade, TL-01

SOG has made the Team Leader for those who want the very best of the best. This fixed blade features incredible balance and a beauty you often don't find in fixed blade knives. The steel is DuraTech™ 20CV. This is one of the first production knives ever to be manufactured from this quality material.

"All told, it’s an absolutely terrific knife."

- David E. Petzal

This fixed blade is very light and thin but has a decently thick spine for use as a survival knife. The thing I first noticed about this knife, besides its most visually stunning lines, was that it feels really good in your hand. The grip has a swell in it that makes for comfortable, ergonomic holding. The handle also has checks on it that give you a solid grip no matter how wet your hand is (read: sweaty, rain-slicked, or slimy). The hybrid shape blade (drop point/leaf point) looks really nice and has some good jimping on the spine so you can get extra leverage with your thumb. The sheath the Team Leader comes with is thick leather and has the SOG logo imprinted on it. I love the sheath.
