So what is the best treatment for depression?

Here is a question which gets asked on a regular basis by people who suffer from depression or know someone who is suffering from depression:

What is the best treatment for depression?

Or

Is there a ‘best' treatment for depression?

Is this the best treatment for depression?

There is no one treatment which is the best for depression.

Simply put, there is no one treatment which will serve as the singular best treatment for depression. Why is this? As there are different types of depression, there are different treatments for depression. Any treatment for depression is usually tailored to the specific needs of the individual.

Is the Best Treatment for Depression Medication or Therapy?

Again, this is down to the individual and his or her circumstances and the underlying causes of any psychological problems they may have. But it is thought that an effective route is a combination of the two.

Many people believe in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, also known as CBT. This type of therapy works to help you break out of any negative thinking cycles which may be fuelling your low moods and emotions.

What else is there?

Also recommended highly by many is something known as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing also known as EMDR.

EMDR is useful for those who have been through a traumatic experience at some point. It places the patient into an altered state of consciousness. By doing this, the brain has a good chance of accepting what happened in the past with any trauma.

Medication can play a part in the treatment for depression by bringing back balance to the chemistry in your brain. But medication is not always effective on its own as it will not deal with any underlying problems. Some can get by with just employing therapy but medication on its own will usually only be a temporary solution.

With a combination of therapy and medication, you can change your way of thinking and processing your thoughts. This can lead to breaking away from the negative thought patterns which lead to many of the other symptoms of depression.

What is the best treatment for depression? As you can see, what may work for one may not work for another.
