Best Way To Learn Spanish

The Best Way To Learn Spanish

What's the best way to learn Spanish? That may vary depending on the person and their learning style. However, I have learned two languages in my adulthood so I have a pretty good idea of what it takes. In addition, I was a teacher of English as a second language for over 8 years. So what I'm about to share here is based on some solid experience.

Choose a Language Course

The best way to learn Spanish is to first choose a Spanish language course. You need some sort of course to guide you through as you first start learning a language. There are several good Spanish courses out there right now. I've been sharing Rocket Spanish recently. You may want to sign up for a face-to-face course if that suits your learning style.

Once you choose a course, be sure to follow it through from beginning to end faithfully. Do not advance to the next lesson until you can say all the words and sentences taught with fluency and beauty.

Many language learners get anxious and just want to advance through the lessons and learn new words and so on. Avoid this temption. Master every word and sentence and be sure they can come out of your mouth with fluency. You may be able to recall the meaning of a word when you see it on a flashcard. But, if it can't come out of your mouth cleary and with fluencely when you actually need it, then it's of no use to you.

Develop a vocabulary Learning System

In addition to have a good course to get you started on the basics, you need to have a systematic way of building your vocabulary. Flashcards are a popular way of doing this, but they don't work too well for most people. They never worked well for me.

I ended up developing a system for learning vocabulary when I was studying Chinese. It helped me Chinese with fantastic pronunciation. I developed a program using this system called Spanish Vocab Pro. The system teaches the learner the 1000 most commonly used Spanish words in a way that greatly maximizes the learning. The learner doesn't just learn new words, he or she improves pronunciation and the beauty and flow of how the sentences come out of the mouth

You definitely need a systematic method for learning vocabulary. Whatever method you use, make sure it's systematic, teaches you the most commonly used vocabulary and forces you to practice your pronunciation so you sound like a native. The best way to learn Spanish must include this kind of vocabulary learning system.

Speak Speak Speak

Finally you have to use the language. Some experts say that immersion is the best way to learn. I found that to be not true for me. I was immersed for several months while studying Spanish and several years while studying Chinese. Being immersed was not enough. You need to the two methods I mentioned above as well. None of these three will work well without the other two. They need to be used in together.

So, make sure you create circumstances for yourself where you can practice the language. If you are not in a Spanish speaking country, then find a local Spanish study group. These exist in many urban areas. These groups will meet on a weekly or monthly basis and practice speaking.

If you are in a Spanish speaking country, then try to motivate yourself to speak to others. I lived in China for eight years, but I often didn't like talking to other people. Maybe I would be tired or just wasn't in a mood to talk to people. I found that introverts do not learn languages as well as extroverts do.

You know those people that like to talk all the time to anyone they meet? You know... the ones that just won't shut up? They tend to be the ones the that learn languages really fast.

To Sum Up

I've shared here three elements of what I believe make up the best way to learn Spanish. They are:

  • Find a language course
  • Develop a systemat way to learn vocabulary
  • Speak to others.

I wish you the best of luck as you attempt to become fluent in Spanish.

Hi vrecc-- nice to see you back again-) Great info here on learning foreign languages--something we native English speakers do far too little of because we can usually find someone who speaks our language anywhere in the world:-)

For me a combo of conversation and formal learning works best. I think it is also easier to learn new languages once you have learned( or at least tried to learn) one--you get to know what the process is like for you so every language you try, especiially if realted to a language you already know is easier than the last one.

I spent some time in Mexico City years ago, lived with a Mexican family and studied Spanish formally as well while I was there. The formal lessons would have been nothing without the total immerson and practice I got just using the language in situationss where if I wanted to talk--I had to do it in Spanish.

Am really impressed by any Westerner who even tackles Chinese--Wow.

Robie,

Thanks!!! I studied both Spanish and Chinese with a lot of passion. It's good fun! I wonder if I will ever have the energy, however, to learn another language. I can't see that happening now. However, I would enjoy the passion and pleasure if I could get into it again.

Regards,

Jonathan
