Best methods of teaching children at home.
65Home schooling is not right for everyone, I would recommend you do a thorough search. You can always check with the department of education in your state or your local school district. That said, there are many programs available, for sale of course, for you to use. There are even programs that school districts are required to pay for; for your use at home.
I would recommend you check to see if there are specific requirements in your area as a place to start. Many public schools have a coordinator of sorts who will require you to sign forms stating that the child is to be home schooled.
Parents are also usually required to notify the superintendent of schools.
Although, the child is home schooled they are under the supervision of the local school system. Usually, the parent or guardian is required to provide a portfolio of materials demonstrating the student's work. Students must receive instruction in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
The school district usually provides textbooks, lesson materials, and possibly other required equipment necessary for the implementation of the curriculum. There is also the possibility of conferences and or site visits insuring proper education is taking place.
Standardized testing is most likely a voluntary participation. But, with NCLB, it may be a requirement, as I said, check with your local school district.
With all of the aforementioned information given, there is more to home schooling than teaching your child at home! It is a good idea to give your child plenty of social situations to participate with children their age. Social skills are a very vital component of schools. Many times that is why children like school! They get to visit with friends. They also get the opportunity to socialize with other adults (their teachers), and this interaction is also important. Children quite frequently behave differently with other adults (as opposed to their parents)! I can remember my parents babysitting my children and when I came to pick them up, my mother would always comment "They were so good, until you got here!" They behaved quite well with her, with me, well lets just say....kids will be kids!
And finally, make sure you involve your children in sports or some other activity. There are many, dance, martial arts, football, soccer, lacrosse etc. Help your child find an activity of interest. Don't let them begin an activity and then just stop. Have them complete the season or a specified length of time (eg 6 months of dance). Teach them to keep their commitments.
I'm sure there are places that you can coordinate with other parents who home school their children, you can check with your church, school district, and social networking sites on the internet.
Best of luck with your endeavor!
