Megabloks are the perfect building blocks for 18 month olds. They are easy to grasp and put together which means little ones can have fun building huge towers and then knocking them down. My son is now 2 1/2. He's had these blocks since he was one, got really interested in them at about 18 months and he still loves building really tall towers with the megabloks. They also keep him entertained for a while which means I have a few minutes to myself.

Lego is a classic toy that you can't go wrong with. Kids love it and the big lego duplo blocks are the definitely one of the best toys for an 18 month old. Again, my son loved lego duplo from 18 months and still has loves playing with his lego duplo at 2 1/2.

18 months is a good age to get a toddler a dump truck. They will love putting things in the back and carting them around. It's a great toy that will last. Older toddlers and preschoolers love pushing around dump trucks too. They make great toys to play with inside or outside. Fill up the truck with sand or mud and push it around the garden or find things around the house to put in the back. This plastic dump truck is a good choice as it's lightweight so easy to push around. Also, there are no sharp corners but its sturdy and durable.

18 months is the age my son started to enjoy play doh. Little hands will enjoy feeling the textures and learning colors with this soft stuff. My son used to love it when I helped him make hundreds of balls and we used to play with it together for a long time.

The Fisher Price Little People range is very popular with this age group. My son got the little bus around 18 months and he loves it. He pushes it around and takes the people in and out. It plays music and beeps too. The little people are the right size for little hands to grasp. He still plays with it now. It's especially great if your child is interested in vehicles and buses. The toy is very sturdy and durable.

This is a highly recommended buy for an 18 month old. They have these cars at a toddler group I go to and they are always occupied by the children. My son absolutely loves sitting in it and "driving". It keeps him entertained for ages. They can be used inside if you have the space but are a great outdoor toy too. It is also a well made toy, sturdy and durable. This is particularly good as your child will probably be using it until he/she is at least 3 (probably older).

18 months is a great age to get a first set of wooden peg puzzles. At this age, they will need help to do them but it's a toy that will last and they will be doing them on their own before you know it. It's great for hand and eye co-ordination and for developing fine motor skills. This particular set will also help them learn number and letters.
