Best Bars with Jukeboxes in Chicago
64Looking for a place that plays more than today's Top 50?
If you are a looking for a good jukebox, you are most likely not looking in the direction of the new-age touch screen jukes, where you can find the latest pop singles or signature hits like "Hotel California" and "Stairway to Heaven." Instead, what you're probably yearning for is a music selection of classic full length albums where you can play your favorite from the artist, some rare musical gems, as well as emerging talented artists that actually exhibit music abilities. If you are a fan of hangouts with a great jukebox like this, you should definitely check out these Chicago areas bars...
Alive One (located at 2683 N. Halsted) has the mother of all rock and roll jukeboxes, consisting of an "all live music" line-up of albums (hence the name A-Live One). The bar, which is filled with pictures, portraits, and autographs of musicians performing live ranging from Jerry Garcia to Lou Reed to Stevie Ray Vaughan, is complimented nicely by the musical selections in the jukebox. Album staples include The Who's "Live at Leeds", The Band's "The Last Waltz" and The Rolling Stones "Rock and Roll Circus". The Alive One juke also has its fair share of Chicago based live performances by the likes of Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and Chicago's own The Smashing Pumpkins.
Carol's Pub (located at 4659 N. Clark) is a well known country music themed hangout. Although the bar looks a bit like a dive, their patrons will probably tell you its grittiness is one of the best aspects to the bar. The jukebox is no different, offering a wide selection of country (everything from hillbilly to blue grass to honky-tonk) along with some more traditional rock and roll music. You won't find any of that pop-country crossover music here! Instead Carol's juke offers artists like Johnny Cash, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, and also includes rock artists ranging from ZZ Top to the Flaming Lips. Consumers may come for the cheap beer and dancing, but the juke is reason enough to stay.
The Easy Bar (located at 1944 W. Division) hosts another great jukebox. This Wicker Park hangout, which opened in late '06, offers up a cool bar and lounge combination and great drinks. And their jukebox is a fabulous compliment to the atmosphere. The Easy Bar's musical selection covers a wide range of artists, most falling into the rock and roll genre. Throughout the night you will hear classics like Tom Petty and David Bowie, but also more recent rockers including The Kings of Leon and local favorite Wilco. There is also a lot of soul in The Easy's juke, which features artists like Ray Charles and even the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Over time the old-fashioned, traditional jukeboxes have thinned out in the marketplace, probably to do to technology, perhaps a little laziness, and today's pop culture. Thankfully the aforementioned bars are some of those out there that are holding strong. Hopefully more hangouts in Chicago will follow in their footsteps.
