Some facts on Australian Wildlife

The mammals

The greatest diversity occurs in the coastal forests and the wet tropics of North Queensland

The 3 different types:

1.Monotremes - The oldest class of living mammals and the only type that lay eggs.

Examples - Platypus and two types of Echidna.

2.Marsupials (give birth to underdeveloped live young)

Examples - Koala, Wombats, Kangaroo and other large footed marsupials(40 different types), Possums, Bandicoots, Bilbies and Numbats. Carnivorous Marsupials (flesh eating) include the Tasmanian Devil and Quolls.

3.Placental Mammals (give birth to fully formed live young)

Examples - Dingoes, Bats, Flying-foxes, Dugong (similar to the Manatee), Seals, Whales and Dolphins.

The Birds (about 9000 species world-wide) - Australia has about 800.

The Reptiles(About 6000 world-wide) - Australia has about 750 native species - including 480 species of lizard, 170 types of snake, about 100 turtle species and 2 crocodile species.

The Amphibians - frogs are the only type of amphibian occurring naturally in Australia. About 200 of the world's 4000 known frog species are found in Australia.

An overview

Steve Irwin probably best promoted Australia and its wildlife over recent years. He was able to create an interest in species such as the Saltwater Crocodile, which have often been viewed as being too dangerous to be worthy of conservation.

However, Australia is best known for its unusual and unique wildlife such as the kangaroo, the koala, the platypus, dingo and the now endangered Tasmanian Devil.

For anyone travelling to Australia, viewing native wildlife is an experience not to be missed. But, to ensure their long-term survival, it is worth finding tours and companies that provide a responsible form of tourism to ensure that many more people can come to view Australia's unique animals in the future.

Where are the best places to see Australian Wildlife?

When it comes to seeking tours and other information on viewing either free or captive animals (for example, Zoos) I would recommend only one place. Wildlife Tourism Australia promotes organisations which use sustainable and responsible practices,

I've refrained from recommending any one tour or destination over another, as it really is a case of personal taste. I would recommend using the link below and seeking information from the states you plan on visiting. Most of the tours and destinations mentioned have their own websites, which also include details on how to get there.

Visit here for information on tours and destinations in each Australian State.

And for more information on Australian Wildlife occuring in each state.

I would actually love to see your personal preferences on where to visit.

As an australian native I know there is so much to do on a trip to Australia and I never know where to point my friend/clients first. I will point them to your Hub in the future. Thanks for the great information!

Mira
