Betta Fish Care - Some Valuable Tips

Betta Fish care is simple! This is a very popular tank fish and caring for it is not too difficult. I shall give you some tips based on my own experience.

These are labyrinth fishes meaning they can take oxygen from the air by coming to the surface of the water. Hence they can also be kept in a bowl. There's no greater joy than seeing that after your consistent betta fish care, your betta is active, healthy and resplendent in all its colors with the finnage fully displayed. However, for this to happen, some amount of details needs to be paid attention to with respect to your betta fish care.

The most important fact to note is that one cannot keep more than one male Betta fish in a single bowl or tank - they are known as "Fighting Fish" and it's for some reason. But one male betta can be kept with quite a few female betta fish provided you have enough space. Some believe that these fishes cannot be kept with other kinds of fishes. But this is not true and you can keep one male betta fish and a few female betta fishes even in a community tank. Just make sure that there are no aggressive breeds present. This is the number one point in betta fish care.

Your bettas shall be much happier and healthier if attention is paid to the cleanliness of their water. As part of your betta fish care, change at least half of the water once every week or sooner if it starts to turn cloudy. Also make sure that you use aged water for changing, meaning, let it stand for twenty four hours. This shall also help in releasing the chemicals (especially chlorine), if there is any.

These fishes have tiny stomachs. It is therefore recommended that one gives small quantities of food maybe twice a day. All kinds of frozen foods and pellets are available in the market but bettas love live food like worms and brine shrimp and so it is a good idea that included in your betta fish care routine, is a treat with these live foods, every once in a while.

These fishes like the temperature of the tank to be between 75 and 84 degrees or 24 -30 degrees Celsius. The ph most suited to keeping them healthy is in the range of 6.8 to 7.3.

Bettas tend to jump out of the water, so make sure you have some kind of cover on the bowl or tank. We normally have a few tank accessories or decorations and care should be taken not to use soap while cleaning them. Even a slight trace of soap residue can have an adverse effect on the health of your beautiful fish.

Keeping bettas is an interesting, enriching and a very satisfying hobby. Once you start on this, your hobby shall grow and you shall want to keep many more of them and learn all about this amazing species.

Some More Tips For Betta Fish Care

Captive bred BETTA FISH have several different tail shapes including Veiltail, Crowntail, Half-moon, and Double-tail. Double-tail bettas also have a significantly elongated dorsal fin.

As suggested before, the water needs to be changed at least once a week....but make sure that water being replenished is at almost the same temperature, otherwise, drastic changes in the water temperature can get your betta fish into a state of shock!

Further, in my experience, its best to add a little aquarium salt while changing the water of the tank/bowl. Apart from the fact that bettas seem to like a little salt in their water, it is of tremendous help in keeping at bay various parasites and fungus which in turn keeps your fish healthy.

I also, often add Aquarisol to the water and this makes sure that itch and velvet do not attack my bettas, as this can often be fatal. You can add one drop per gallon while treating/changing the water.
