Betty Neels is one of my favorite romance authors. Her romances are sweet, gentle stories with handsome heroes and satisfying endings. Betty Neels was a nurse who when she retired starting writing romance novels. She lived into her 90s and was pulishing to the end. Her first books came out in the 1960's and the last was about the turn of the century. All her books were at least partly set in England, where she was from. Many were also set in Holland, where she lived with her husband for several years. He was Dutch, like many of her characters and was the model for some of them, even though he was not a doctor. Most of her romances, but not all, were between a doctor and usually a nurse or someone in the medical field.

I have included the book descriptions from the back of the book for each title and will add more details and my own reviews for each title. All of the titles are from Harlequin Romance. To make the website easier to use I have divided up the Betty Neels titles into several pages. This Page is for titles 3347 to 3758

3347 A Valentine for Daisy

At least the kids liked him! Dictatorial, overbearing and downright rude! Dr. Valentine Seymour might be an excellent pediatrician, but however good he was with his small patients, he needed to develop more of a bedside manner with adults. Daisy disliked him the first time they met and he certainly didn't improve on further acquaintance, but somehow fate-not to mention his twin nephew and niece-meant that she had to keep meeting the man...Of course, she had a lot to thank him for--her new job with the twins among other things. Had she misjudged him after all?

3389 A Christmas Wish

For Olivia Harding, the offer of employment at an exclusive private girl’s school had come as something of a godsend. With little experience, she hadn’t expected to find a job so easily, let alone one that still brought her into contact with her former boss, the eminent Dutch surgeon Haso van der Eisler. Of course, his frequent visits to the school had more to do with his goddaughter, Nel, than her own limited attractions. Nel was al lonely, fatherless girl, and that Haso should marry her glamorous mother seemed obvious to all but Olivia’s stubborn heart!

3415 The Bachelor’s Wedding

A practical marriage? Araminta Smith had first met Professor Jason Lister when she was hired to look after his niece and nephew. Knowing that her plain but honest looks weren't about to catch her a husband, she was intrigued by the distinguished surgeon's interest in her. Since he was also a confirmed bachelor, the professor's proposal came as an even greater surprise. A marriage between them, as he pointed out to her, would be infinitely practical--and Araminta was nothing if not practical. But then...what about love?

Araminta lives with her father and spoiled sister. A couple of years ago a doctor said her sister should take it easy and she hasn’t done anything since. Their father dotes on her and neglects Araminta. She goes out on temporary jobs and ends up using it to pay household bills. There is a emergency job to gets some kids (their father is ill in another country and their mother must go to him) and take them to their uncle and care for them there. Eventually she takes them back to their home and takes care of them. Their housekeeper is ill and there is no one else. These are not the nicest kids, they are pretty dismissive of Araminta.

Eventually , Jason meets the spoiled sister and points out to her that she is well now. Araminta gets a new temp job taking care of an old lady and it is awful. Jason finds her and proposes to her. It is not a good proposal, he says he must settle for second best and asks her to marry him!! Family isn’t nice about wedding, try to make her feel guilty. Her father says she is marrying out of her class. But he does come to the wedding, Jason had paid him too. But Araminta doesn’t know that. Alice, her sister, doesn’t come and she doesn’t wish her luck. Eventually they rescue his nephew from a flood and there is a happy ending. But, God she has a nasty family!!

3435 dearest mary jane

"The moment I set eyes on a handsome, rich man I shall marry him." So said Felicity, and as she was the glamorous sister with a successful career as an international model, Mary Jane had no reason to doubt her. Mary Jane was the stay at home with no talents to speak of and a face that never merited a second glance. So it was hardly surprising that Sir Thomas Latimar treated Mary Jane as no more than a future sister-in-law. If only she hadn't been fool enough to fall in love with him...

3467 The right kind of girl

Emma Trent had spent most of her life looking after other people, so it was a shock to encounter a man so determined to take care of her -- Sir Paul Wyatt was fast becoming her very own guardian angel!  She was hardly in a position to turn down his proposal of marriage, even if it was motivated by convenience on his part. With her plain looks and practical nature, Emma knew her limitations, but longed for children of her own. Could the eminent surgeon be the answer to all her dreams?

3492 Marrying Mary

Everyone in her family had agreed that Mary Pagett would one day make some man a perfect wife. The problem was that the only man had ever even thought about marrying was eminent Dutch heart specialist Roel van Rakesma. From the moment he had walked into her life Mary had become quite contrary—turning from a practical girl into a hopeless romantic. But it had been clear from the start that any attention he paid her was purely professional . His only interest was in curing frail hearts, not broken ones!

3512 A Kiss for Julie

Julie Beckworth enjoyed her work as a medical secretary at Saint Bravo's Hospital in London, so it was a nasty surprise when her elderly boss, Professor Smythe, announced that he was retiring. After a moment's panic, she was partly reassured when told Professor Simon van der Driesma was willing to keep her on, but Simon turned out to be a very different proposition. He was younger, more energetic, and worked Julie much harder--all of which she could have accepted if he would only call her Julie, and not "Miss Beckworth" in that cool voice! Both of them had the wrong impression of the other--what would it take for the truth to be revealed?

3527 The Vicar’s Daughter

All the village assumed that Margo Pearson was to marry George, but unexpectedly meeting Professor Gijs van Kessel made her pause for thought. But being a plain, practical girl, Margo knew the professor was most unlikely to look her way. It took a tragic accident to bring an offer of marriage--from the professor. It was a practical proposal, but as Margo was taken into the bosom of his family over Christmas in Holland, she did wonder whether he might, someday, return her love....Margo and Gijs meet when she flags him down on a country road. She has found a group of travelers (gypsies) in the woods and one of them is having a baby. Luckily he is a doctor and delivers the child.

Margo has a boring boyfriend George with a bossy, nasty mother. She decides they won’t work out so goes to stay with her aunt and meets the doctor again. While there she rescues a little girl from a creek. And of course, Gijs is her doctor. She goes home, and in December there is a car crash. Both her parents are killed instantly. Gijs helps her with the funeral. Her aunt asks him what will happen to her, he says he will marry her. Later, after the funeral, he does ask her. While he proposes, he said she must promise to tell him if she ever falls in love. Of course, she says yes, but she is already in love with him. He just hasn’t noticed. They go to Holland for Christmas and she finds out he is rich. This is a platonic marriage and Margo works hard to be a good wife. While looking in the attic for furniture for their new house she comes across a cradle. It’s obvious she wants children.

Eventually they go back to their London house and his married sister comes for a visit. She had a fight with her husband and is flirting with another man. He takes it seriously and she is scared. Margo promises not to tell anyone and she goes to tell that man that the relationship is over. Gijs sees this and gets mad and he sends her to her aunt’s house for awhile. She can’t tell because she promised. Margo gets fed up and goes to Holland and tells him he can have an annulment because he doesn’t trust her. He tells her he loves her too much to keep her. The sister finally confesses and Gijs rushes home to find Margo in the attic sobbing over the cradle.

3537 Only by Chance

Life had not been easy for Henrietta Cowper, but she hoped to improve her lot. Then, shortly after she first met consultant neurosurgeon Mr. Adam Ross-Pitt, her small world changed irrevocably. She had Mr. Ross-Pitt to thank for her new job at the manor house near his home, but she was sensible enough to realize that he was beyond her reach. If her gratitude tipped into love, there was no need for him to know--even if he did continue to come to her rescue....

3577 An Innocent Bride

Aunt Thirza had been a lifeline to Katrina Gibbs, but her death left Katrina with little money and no marketable skills. She had inherited her aunt's small cottage in Dorset. She also, though she didn't know it, had Simon Glenville, the wonderful doctor who had cared for Aunt Thirza.  Simon knew he loved Katrina, and he thought Katrina loved him, but so much had happened to her he wasn't at all sure this innocent but gallant girl was aware of it. When the time was right, he would propose, they'd plan a white wedding, and he would cherish her all their days....

3583 The Daughter of the Manor

Why did James keep helping her? It was deeply irritating to Leonora Crosby that she was always caught out in awkward moments by the new village doctor, James Galbraith. It shouldn't have mattered -- she was engaged to Tony, after all! -- but James proved a stalwart support as Leonora did her best to keep her parents' decrepit but much-loved manor house running smoothly. All this made her begin to doubt the wisdom of her engagement. But there was little point in admitting that she loved James, when he showed so little sign of caring for her....

No# Heaven around the Corner

Louisa did want desperately to get out from under the roof of her disagreeable stepmother, and she couldn't bear the thought of marrying Frank, who bored her. So after finishing nursing school, she jump at the offer of a challenging job that would take her to Norway. But this exciting move didn't solve all her problems: Louisa was having lots of trouble with one patient, Claudia Savage, whose uncooperative brother Simon seemed to make matters worse. Louisa was doing-her best; couldn't Simon see that? Did he always have to be so unpleasant towards her?

Louisa's stepmother is anxious for her to marry so she can have a son in law to pay her bills. Miss Savage has a vague liver complaint, but her doctor says she needs a nurse when she goes to Norway. Her brother, really her stepbrother, holds the purse strings and says she must come to Norway and stay with him. Claudia has some friends that Simon dislikes so he wants her with him. they at first are in the city and Cluadia keeps encouraging Louisa to go out and see the city and keeps sending her to the bank for more money. One day, Simon meets her at the bank and insists they go back to the apartment right away. Cluadia is there passed out drunk. She is an alcoholic and no one had told Louisa. Claudia had told her doctor that Louisa already knew and her friends were geting her alcohol. So Simon takes them up north to a small village where they are building the bridge.Along the way Claudia has fallen in love. Her treatment includes 2 drinks a day, and she says that love is curing her. I know that you shouldn't expect a book to be too realistic but this is a rotton treatment!! If you are an alcoholic you can't have any alcohol, period. And love doesn't save people from the condition, that's just a dangerous myth. I know the book was written about 30 years ago, but I am still surprised by the awful medicine in it. But the book itself is interesting. I enjoyed the descriptions of Norway and Louisa is a nice character.
