Have you read Between Two Men? Have you even heard about it? Let me tell you then...

My favorite passage is, “Sam knew things about Malik that most men never know about another man.” He knew these things because, “they shared some of their most intimate moments in the same room, in the same bed, in the same woman.”

For most people, especially women, fidelity and love are connected. But in Between Two Men, Von is not an ordinary woman. Von is “fragments of a person who possesses intricate traits resembling emotions but not quite the same.” She is also the vibrant center of a triangle.

On one side there is Sam, Von’s high school sweetheart turned lifelong partner. Although he would prefer to have Von all to himself, Sam grows content with the idea of sharing her sexually as long as she loves only him.

On the other side there is Malik, Von’s husband. Educated and reserved, Malik is the complete opposite of Sam. He would likely be a conservative if he wasn’t entangled in Von’s world, which deviates from almost all norms.

When Von contracts an unexplainable and potentially terminal illness, the two men, who were once bitter enemies, come together to care for the elderly woman who has been at the center of their lives since their young days.

Considering the circumstances, one wouldn’t think that Von would need to hide anything. But, her illness reveals that she has kept a secret from her two men; a secret that will change everything.

Infidelity and immorality are central elements in Between Two Men, yet the story is told from a perspective that is non-judgmental. The only attitudes expressed toward those elements are the attitudes of the people involved.

Instead, Between Two Men concerns itself with telling the story of three lives that revolve around one person. In the end, it becomes quite clear that none of the characters have the grasp on the situation that they believed they had.

Between Two Men is good transit reading. If you are a subway or car pool commuter or if you have a plane or train to catch, it’s the right size and the right pace. It also makes interesting bedtime reading. There are definitely some passages that are worth nudging your partner and saying, hey, listen to this.

Even if none of the above circumstances apply to you, meaning even if you are a complete hermit with an empty bed, Between Two Men is still good reading.
