Bhangra is an vivacious and exciting genre of folk music and dance that is from the Punjab.

People have traditionally performed Bhangra in celebration of the yearly harvest.

During Bhangra, Pakistanis sing Punjabi Boliyaan lyrics, someone plays the the dhol drum, and others make music with the flute, dholak drum, and other instruments.

While Bhangra started as an integral part of harvest festival celebrations, it evolved and became a part of diverse occasions including weddings and New Year celebrations. In addition, during the last 30 years, Bhangra has had a surge in popularity world-over; and has been merged in other musical genres like reggae and hip-hop.

Originally Bhangra may have started in the 1400's or earlier, and while primarily men performed Bhangra, ladies had their own dance-form which they called Giddha. The men sported the turbin, lungi ( a long material which was wrapped around the waist), and kurta (which is a traditional Indian blouse), while the women, when performing Giddha, wore the salvar kameez (a long colorful shirt accompanied with a baggy style bottom piece) accompanied by their bright colored duppattas (cloth wrapped around the neck).
