Punjab the state of five rivers, situatued in the northern part of india is known for its folk dance bhangra all over the world. Bhangra in one term to means life, I just love bhangra music. The music and rhythm of this form of music has so much punch that anyone can hardly resist hitting the dance floor. It is an amalgamation of some great instruments namely the dhol drum, and other people may play the flute, dholak drum, or other musical instruments.

Indian Bhangra Music

It is just in the past couple of years that this dance form has had the remix beats and gained popularity like never before. Even now in Punjab in the locales and villages you will still find the traditional and Punjabi boliyan lyrics. Whereas in cities and metros of India and worldwide; it has taken a whole new form with a fusion of hip-hop, house, and reggae. Trust me for all music lovers who want to hit the dance floor this is sure dance hit.

In the West, there are many popular artists. From England, there are DCS, Malkit Singh, B21, Safri Boyz, and Dippa. The Bollywood film industry collaborated with the RDB and snoop dog and the album was one of the top chart numbers ever.

Celebrating the harvest

Baisakhi a well known festival among the Sikhs and people of north India, made this dance form prevalent. This dance is done in happiness of the harvest every year. All the men and women are decked up in the best of clothes; their attire is comprised colourful lungis, waistcoats and turbans.

Dance form:

It is an energetic dance involving vigorous movements of the shoulder and hips. Dancers often form a circle with pairs of dancers periodically taking centre stage to give solo performances that showcase their best learned skills. The gidha which is the female version of bhangra is performed by the ladies. The rest of dancers clap in jubiliation when the set of dancers take the center stage to show their skill.

Appeals to an international audience

Not long back when i was in London and watching the britian’s got talent show which was aired last year; the first runner up had a bhangra and a Michael Jackson routine. It just is a symbolic gesture to show that music has the power to bind hearts. It gave me immense pleasure to see the audience encouraging them. Be it in Bollywood all the foot tapping chart numbers have a background Punjabi score. In the earlier days it was just a celebration to celebrate the harvest season in the villages.

Bollywood and the pop songs have taken bhangra beats to a whole new level. In Punjabi weddings this has become the soul for every celebration it brings life into any occasion. In today’s music world, it has gone beyond the boundaries of Punjab. Sukhbir, Gurdaas Maan and Daler Mahendi have given top charting Punjabi numbers creating a huge rage among all communities of the world.

Crossing boundaries the bhangra music has found its second home in London. It is the remix era where songs have more spunk and beats like never before and they are being loved by disc jockeys.  Music is what brings every one together.

Not all of our movements improve our well being. Consider the sore neck you got from wrapping gifts and the backache from standing over a hot oven to make holiday cookies.
