Bicycle Safety Tips

Be Safe!
Bicyclists. Please. It's awesome that you cycle instead of drive. I wish I could since it's good for the environment and for exercise. But, I live and drive in Boston, and I see a lot of bikers out there on the roads who are maniacs. It's risking my neck enough just driving around Boston, much less having to look out for crazy bicyclists who don't pay attention. Here are some tips to keep you safe and keep me from hitting you...(and I think I'm a fairly decent driver...)
1. WEAR A HELMET. I can't stress this enough. You can be the most talented cyclist out there, but you can't account for nature. What happens if you hit that pebble on the road in the exact spot that makes you tumble? Keep your noggin protected.
2. Follow the same rules as cars. Stop at the stop signs. Stop at a red traffic light and don't go until it turns green. Turn left from the left turn lane. Signal your turns with your left arm: Bent at the elbow for a right turn and straight out for a left turn. Just because your vehicle only has 2 wheels, it is still a vehicle. And it keeps you and everyone else safe if you follow the rules.
3. Watch out for others. If you're on a path through nature that also allows people to walk, be aware of the walkers. Slow down to go around them. Keep an eye on them, because who knows if they're going to decide to turn or make a movement that could endanger you or them. Use a bell, or call out and say which side you're passing on. And if the path takes you across a street, at least slow down, if not stop, to make sure there are no cars coming. It's their street, they have the right of way. Even if there's a crosswalk, you should still look.
Only 3 steps. That's it. Not hard to remember. I don't want to hit you with my car. If anything, at least keep that in mind! I like life and I'm sure you do too. These simple tips will keep you out of danger.

Good tips for cyclists to stay safe. I guess this can change depending where you are and I´m thinking about Amsterdam where cyclists are the majority and they always have priority over motorized traffic. Unfortunately things aren´t like that in almost everywhere else :(
I hope you´ll never hit any biker (for his/her sake) and who knows, maybe one day you´ll be safe riding too ;-)
Have fun!
