Big Brother Live Feed
62Big Brother Live
Big Brother 10 is the first Big Brother since the opening series of the show to have no live feed. What is live feed? Well it's what makes Big Brother work. From internet streaming to a red button on the tv that takes you to a devoted channel, live feed has been an integral part of Big Brother viewing for fans since series 2.
As Big Brother is a social experiment, seeing how different personalities cope with living together 24 hours a day for possible 3 months, live feed is the only way to actually get to know the personalities involved. An hour of highlights a day does not work with the format of Big Brother. Sure that's how the first series was shown, just an hour of highlights per day, but the format was brand new to the UK then. We didn't know any different. We were eager to tune in and see what the housemates had been up to. It was a novel and refreshing new TV format.
But it made sense to give the viewers more access to what was going on in the Big Brother house. By giving us live feed, we got to see the dynamics on our terms, not on some heavily edited highlights show.

Big Brother Live Feed
Live feed made it possible to make real judgements on housemates, and after all, that's what is intended from the viewer. In order to pick up a phone and spend money voting people out of the house, we need reasons. The highlights format doesn't show housemates in a rounded way.
If channel 4 decide to portray a particular housemate as the baddie, it may only take being grumpy in the mornings and having an aversion to pasta to do so. Editing is a very powerful tool. Same with a housemate they choose to portray as the good guy. They might be the shittiest person, but if they have a few moments of humour and a polite conversation during the day, hey, that can be edited too. It doesn't matter that for the other 23.5 hours they bullied and ruled the house in a negative way, we don't need to be shown all the other housemates talking about it. In edit mode, it never happened.
With live feed you can't get away from the truth. You know that so and so has a problem with X. Y fancies Z, A, B and C all enjoy cooking together, D and E are hysterical. F's a bit of a misery guts but with a heart of gold.
Without live feed, everything we see as Big Brother viewers is what Channel 4 want us to see. Sure for Big Brother 10 we have live coverage on E4 from Midnight to 5am, but aside from the general human need for sleep as viewers, what about the housemates? We get to see what they are like in the early hours of the mornings, is that a rounded view of personalities? Of course it isn't.
Why Was BB Live Feed So Important?
The thing that made Big Brother great, and viewed by millions was the water cooler aspect. Not everyone who watched the highlights show watched live feed. But everyone who watched live feed spread the gossip, the emerging relationships, the arguments and scandalous moments.
So though not everyone had big brother live feed streaming on their computers at work, if the red button was available on E4 or Sky, others would dip in and out when at home. Thus more discussion is created amongst everyone.
Series 10 of Big Brother is nothing more than an hour long filler for Channel 4, they've even scrapped the charity percentage from the phone votes meaning they keep all the revenue generated now. It's quite clear to see that Channel 4 are trying to kill the Big Brother format for when their contract is up. Hoping that by the time another channel buys the format, that no one will be interested in it anymore. But bring back the live streaming and Big Brother fans will follow. So long as there is accessible 24 hour coverage, the Big Brother format will be popular.
The live feed debate has proven so emotive, that there has been death threats to Channel 4 bosses families. That's taking it way too far, but it does go to show that Big Brother live feed is a big issue, most fans just aren't crazy enough to make such a stupid outcry.
