Big Things In Montana, Big Things In Our Little Town!!
73Big Things, Little Town!!!!
OK, so I live in this little tiny town, tucked away from the rest of the world...where you forget the "real world" exists somewhere beyond our boundaries!!! A two lane highway runs east to west, the main hub through our beautiful small town!!! To give you a clear idea of just how small it is, we have:
2 grocery stores, 2 hardware stores, 2 home lumber stores, 1 sports-center, 1 retail/variety
1 movie theater (built in 1910, you can still see a movie for $3!)
3 public grade schools,1 middle, 1 senior high and 1 community college outreach center
1 golf course, 1 bowling alley, 1 athletic club and 1 roller rink (which is rarely open!)
1 McDonald's, 1 Subway, 1 Pizza Hut, 1 DQ (only open several months each year)
2 "fire-safe" hotels, no "chain" restaurants, no taxi cabs, no donut or bagel shops!!!
1 airport ("with a 5,000 foot lighted runway with a beacon") small aircraft only!
1 train station (never "manned" - doors only open 2 hours prior to departure, which is 10:59 pm and 5:26 am .... tough waiting and boarding, during the frigid cold of winter!!)
1 hospital, 1 volunteer fire department, 1 post office, 1 library, 1 dmv, 3 banks, 1 courthouse
2 internet service providers, 2 cable and 1 telephone company
2 radio stations (1 brand new!!), 2 newspapers, printed once and the other twice weekly
AND, Oh my...I just stumbled upon these statistics posted on a detailed profile website regarding my LITTLE town:
Likely homosexual households (counted as self-reported same-sex unmarried-partner households) -
- Lesbian couples: 0.1% of all households
- Gay men: 0.4% of all households
People in group quarters -
- 83 people in nursing homes
- 25 people in local jails and other confinement facilities (including police lockups)
- 14 people in homes for the mentally retarded
- 4 people in training schools for juvenile delinquents
- 3 people in other non-institutional group quarters
You just can't make this stuff up people!!!
Montana on the other hand has some of the biggest "things" going:
~ Rock Creek Lodge just outside of Clinton, Montana throws the world’s biggest testicle festival (yep you read that right!!!) every fall attracting more than 15,000 fans to its five day event. Tossing around its motto, “I had a ball at the Testicle Festival,” the festival feeds over 2 ½ tons of bull balls to its many hungry revelers.
~ Montana has the biggest migratory elk herd in the nation.
~ Montana boasts the biggest breeding population of trumpeter swans in United States.
~ North of Missoula, Montana is the biggest population of nesting common loons in the western USA.
~ In 1888 Helena had the biggest population of millionaires per capita than any other city in the world!
~ Flathead Lake contains over 200 square miles of water and 185 miles of shoreline; considered to be the biggest natural freshwater lake in the west.
~ Montana has the biggest grizzly bear population in the lower 48 states.
~ Hill County has the biggest county park in the USA...Beaver Creek Park measures 10 miles long by 1 mile wide.
~ The biggest snowflake ever observed was recorded on January 28, 1887...at nearly 15 inches wide!!
~ Giant Springs is home to the biggest fresh water spring in the U.S.
~ Montana holds the world record for the biggest temperature change in 24 hours. On January 14-15, 1972, the temperature went from from -54°F to 49°F, a whopping 103 degree difference!
~ The World's Largest Steer can be found in Baker, at the O'Fallon Museum. Weighing in at 3,980 pounds, he grew to be 5'9" tall and 10'4" long!
AND.... Montana is known, after-all, as Big Sky Country!!!!!
In pondering this entire BIG idea, I began to look around my little town and found some BIG things here too!!! Since pictures speak louder than words, I want to sum up my little hub, by sharing BIG things from my little town:
Big, Big Things!

LOVE IT Montana Farm Girl!!! Thank you for sharing - GREAT JOB! Heading out that way soon :) The heads up on -54 reminded me of winter in Winnepeg. My boss/friend knew I wanted to travel so he sent me out there the end of Jan one year. As soon as I stepped off the plane, I could hear him laughing - 60 below with the windchill factor - YIKES! That takes some getting used to I imagine :)
Gorgeous spot in the world! Bet you guys have BIG hearts too
Well this is a big hub from a lil gal with a big heart for her animals and hubby too. Love it
It really sounds and looks a lovely part of the world Karen and there's a lot of 'big' ideas coming from your pen. My only knowledge of Montana is from the old movies with stars like James Stewart, and big herds of gorgeous brown Herefords! I can update that now can't I!
Easy to fall in love with your "little" town with its own lovely "big" things, MFG. How about adding a pic or two of the golf course too? :)
Sounds like your little town has everything you might need! :)
The highway you speak of, is it I-90? Flathead lake is humongous as well. I am originally from north Idaho and have been to and through Montana thousands of times. Great Big Sky country.
Great hub. There are many times I dream of moving to a place like that. Secluded and away from the "real world". Something I plan to do when my kids are gone. Anyway, very entertaining glimpse into your life and city. I've never been to Montana, hear it's gorgeous from my friends.
What a great hub! It was so much fun to read - I loved the statistics! You certainly have your little corner of heaven...just don't let Stephen King stay in your town LOL. (You KNOW what he does to small towns lol)
You do live in a beautiful area. I am not sure where you are in relation to Rick Bass but he is one of my favorite authors with his stories from Montana.
Wow, thanks so much everyone for reading and taking time to leave me such WONDERFUL comments!!! No wonder, I love hanging out here at HubPages!!! :-)
Interesting hub! I loved your beautiful state when I visited last summer. Hmmmmm....wonder how they measured that snowflake?!! Keep up the good work!
Hey montana,I be going to the testicle festivel myself.
I know huh.... they must have measured it outside, or surely it would have melted if they had taken it inside to do so!!!!
I'm jealous you're going to the festival!!! Lived in Missoula many years ago, and never made it there (although I planned to). Now, we're 3+ hours away, and won't make it this year, as we are still working diligently on renovation we want to finish before winter... Eat one for me!!! :-)
Hey Montana Farm Girl, your little town doesn't sound so different from mine...or Waldport for that matter ;) It is nice to see that you are renovating rather than tearing it down to build brand new. Seems like in this day and age everyone wants to out the old and bring in the new, a good mixture of the two is what it takes to reach harmony. Great hub and I look forward to reading more of them.
Yep, I know what you are saying!!! So many folks, especially the old timers here, thought for certain we would tear it down and build another or place a modular here... we blew them away, by NOT doing that!!! And, now that we've worked so hard to demo and rebuild, those same folks tell us what an awesome job we've done!!! Thanks for coming by to read my story and leave your warm comments!!
I feel like I just visited Montana! Your hub conveys a great small town feeling, I think the Mayor of your town would really like to see this Hub.
Great facts/trivia, sounds like a wonderful place to live. I do have you beat in one aspect however. My little town is smaller than yours. Population of about 1200-1300 people, no theater, no schools, etc. Small town life has it's advantages.
Thanks so much for reading and taking time to comment!! Netadept soooooooooooooooo kind of you; wow, made my day!!! And, Mulberry.... no schools...wow, that is small :-)
Loved reading this hub. Your statistics are fascinating...especially the Big Things in your little town. Had to do a double take on that Testacle Festival. Can't be many others like that in the good 'ole USA! Ha!
Wow! Cool place and good information on such a quaint but cool sounding little town. Love it! Have been in Montana as a child, and have friends from there but don't know much about it, until now. Thanks for your hub!
Thanks for stopping by to read and comment on my hub. You should look your friends up, and come back for a visit!! :-)
it must be an awesome experience to live here
Yes indeed Yangtze, it is wonderful living here!! Each and everyday we say to ourselves and to each other, how blessed we feel to call this place home!!!! Thanks for reading and taking time to comment, I so appreciate your support!! :-)
This is great!! All your talk of your small town reminded me of the small town where I grew up. I think it was smaller than your town. We didn't have a DMV or a movie theater, not much of anything, really.
my family and I haved lived in St Ignatius, Bigfork, Whitefish and Martin City...where you are sure reminds me of Ronan...but the dam in your pic is closer to martin city than ronan...I am so curious!! give it up Montana farm girl!! where are you? :)
LOL, you figured it out when you read my hot rod hub huh!!!??? lol!!!!!
your hub made me dreame about this place..really want to visit once.. nice pics as well..
Clara, you must visit if you can....Montana truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth :-)

The big things in your "little" town are fascinating! I placed the "little" in quotation there because what you consider as "little" is already "big" in our part of the world.
