More than two trillion tons of land ice in Greenland, Alaska and Antartica have melted since 2003, as per  NASA satellite data that show the latest signs of what scientists say is global warming.

More than half of the loss of landlocked ice over a period of last five years has happened in Greenland, based on measurements of ice weight by NASA's GRACE Satellite. The water melting from Greenland in the past five years would fill up about 11 Chesapeake Bays and this melting seems to be accelerating.

NASA scientists are planning to present their findings on Thursday at the American Geophysical Union Conference in San Francisco. When the NASA satellite started taking measurements since 2003, Alaska has lost 400 billion tons of landice.

Unlike seaice, melting of landice increases sea level very slightly. In the year 1990, Greenland did not add to world sea level rise; but, now that this island is adding half a millimetre of sea level rise a year, as informed by NASA.
