What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram Yoga is a type of yoga that is also called Hot Yoga. It was created in Los Angeles, California by Bikram Choudhury.

Bikram Yoga is generally performed only in hot rooms at approximately 105°F at a humidity of around 40%.

There are 26 postures (asana) in Bikram Yoga, as well as two specialized breating exercises. Each class lasts an average of 90 minutes.

Bikram yoga is beoming more and more popular, with bikram yoga classes being taught in almost all major cities, and some smaller towns, as well. If you want to learn bikram yoga, you can look for classes in your area, or you can purchase a DVD. It's very easy to learn how to do bikram yoga from a DVD, but it's not as easy to do it from a book. Because of this, I advise getting a bikram yoga DVD to get started.

Bikram Hot Yoga Criticisms

A lot of people have criticized Bikram for vigorously defending his intellectual copyrights to this yoga style, saying it goes against the very teachings of ancient yoga. They claim his motives are pursely materialistic and people have rushed to judge him harshly.

Whether or not you agree with this viewpoint, bikram yoga is increasing in popularity, and it now being taught in many upscale centers around the world and including some celebrity clientele.

I've been doing bikram yoga for about 2 mths now and love it. It has definately loosened up my shoulders and I am sleeping better at night. There are a lot of health benefits from this type of yoga and I will continue on training in this style. :)
