China alone has over 100 different dialects. The different languages such as, Spanish and Italian is similiar to most Chinese dialects.
"What are you doing", mean "Ni gan shenme in Mandarin.
Hainan Island would say "Lu do me Lei."
Chinese character mostly look the same when writing. You notice if you ever watched chinese movies they have subtitles. The reason for it is that the Mandarin, Cantonese, and Shanghainese all know what they are saying is the reason for the subtitles.
Subtitles in these languages are mandatory. If you do travel to China, Japan, or Thailand and you are just clueless with the language, visiting in hotels you might need a translator to help you out with the speaking in their native tongue.
Our native tongue with English, here in America which means poorly, which used to be French, now it's more accepted as an international business language.

Learning a foreign language can be quite difficult, but repetition is the key to frequent learning even though when traveling to these countries learning a word like bathroom.
It amaze me how sometime they recognize "toilet" as bathroom when making facial expression, the look of astonish when one has to use the bathroom. Japanese culture is great for massages.
When one wants a massage, just wave your hands in the air and say the word "massage". Tea and coffee is known, for tourist people. So the Japanese culture know that well.
Taxi is also known, expecially when you stand on the curb, a taxi will pull over for you. If you are lost, and you want a map for direction. Just hold out your palm and use the word map.
Most of us when we get thirsty and want water.
Visiting a place like China, we must know how to say water in their language which is "shui
In Japan which is "mizu". for saying water.
