Key Steps In Developing a Biosafety Program

  • The biohazard safety requirements promulgated by governmental and laboratory (repository) accrediting organizations needs to be identified and are the likely sources of up-to-date information as to biosafety. Using this information in forming an overall safety program and training programs related to biohazards.
  • In developing and maintaining a safety program, necessary organizational infrastructure needs to be developed.
  • Identification of work activities and the safety issues of each activity as well as risks in various workspaces need to be identified while taking risks and general issues of biosafety in the repository into consideration.
  • To ensure biosafety based on published information, national, regional, and local regulations as well as local and consultant experience a written guidelines needs to be developed. These guidelines should be evaluated and updated from time to time and modified at the earliest to rectify any recognized problems. Records of incidents involving safety of personnel as well as corrective actions needs to be maintained.
  • Creation and execution of training program of which a main focus is biosafety and keep records of employee training.

Subsequently the requirements of national regulations are discussed. It is beyond the scope of this document to providing specific actions and details to improve safety in organizations handling human and/or animal specimens. For safety training and for establishing or improving a safety program, multiple books and articles are devoted to specific safety information, which is appropriate.

Special Safety Considerations
