Bird Netting - Get Rid Of Birds

Bird netting works alongside the same principles as bird spikes. They are designed and manufactured to deter birds from roosting and nesting on buildings - in short, get rid of birds. Whether that’s roofs, parapets, ledges or whatever, if it’s flat and unoccupied, then you’ll find birds roosting upon it.

Inner city and urban areas do experience a lot of mess and noise from birds – predominantly pigeons and in coastal areas, seagulls. They are common and tend to gather in large groups. Not good for business – or for anyone that wants to avoid the sight of the mess or even (worst case scenario!) being hit by bird droppings.

Seagulls are obviously going to be bigger on noise than your average pigeon but still – think of Trafalgar Square in London and you’ll know that pigeons are a close second in the noise stakes. And the mess they leave behind is probably on a par. Unfortunately.

The difference between bird netting and bird spikes is this: bird spikes are (obviously!) spiky in appearance and they’re glued upon a flat surface. Also – one size fits all, if you understand. Spikes are spikes and will deter any species of bird. Bird netting is not one size fits all –they actually come in sizes according to the type of birds you want to deter.

They tend to be a bit more complicated to install – you can’t simply glue them to your window ledge. You need a few items in order to install them correctly – the netting, steel fixings (depending on what you’re fixing them to), cable ties, drill bits and a few other items.

However, you can just buy a bird netting kit – where everything you need is included within the pack. Probably the easier option for the uninitiated bird netting DIYer and cheaper to boot. Installing the netting involves a bit of effort and in my opinion, the kit forms are probably easier to use.

Bird netting is raised above the area you wish to deter birds from roosting upon. Not quite so useful as bird spikes with regard to ease of installation and use – netting doesn’t work on ledges or on surveillance camaeras for eg – but they’re great from keeping them out of your garden, away from crops and market garden type environments.

Bird Netting - Effective For Larger Areas

Bird netting is also great for larger areas, such as covering an entire roof on a large building. And, as with bird spikes, they’re considered a humane way of deterring birds from roosting where they’re not welcome.

I also know that vineyard owners have a tendency to net their vines – otherwise they’d lose crops to whatever happens to fly by.

I read somewhere about a vineyards' account of the annual bird netting task – it didn’t sound a great deal of fun. If anything, it sounded like a lot of hard work. Still, if it wasn’t for bird netting to bird proof the vines - I guess we’d be sat drinking water with our meals.
