Our Old Basswood Tree

Last week the old basswood tree was hit by lighting and the whole side was blown out. The wood ducks were gone but it may have killed a few squirrels. We thought it was a bomb. It shook our whole house. We walked out to the road to see what had happened and all we could see was a storm way off in the distance. It took a few days before we realized it was the tree that had been hit. The tree is still standing but I don't know for how long.

It's really to bad the birds and animals loved that old tree.

It was about 70 ft. tall.

Basswood are also called American Linden. They grow well to zone 2 so their good for way up the north. Old hallow trees like ours make great place for wildlife.

They are used for carving but also for furniture, veneer, drawing boards and tongue dpressors.

Honey from the linden flower is the best there is.

The old tree has stood there all summer and looking worse everyday. We have decided we have to get someone here to take it down. I'm going to try and film it when they come. By cutting it down in the winter there shouldn't be anything living in it. Maybe a squirrel but no little ones. It's a danger to all of us now and each day the split is getting bigger.

Couple birds that loved our old tree.

Thank you for sharing. I love the picure of the purple finch. We get those here at our home in Northern Michigan too. Though I don't get many cardinals I used to get tons of them when I lived in central Virginia.

Wishing you all the best,ShellyB

Thanks for signing my. We don't often get cardinals this far north that's why he was so rare for us. I had a hard time getting the blurry picture that I got.

Just_Rodney thinks for comments about my pictures. I may have got a few ticks trying to get the pictures.

I'm originally from WI, which is where I understand you are... Great pix of the birds, especially the lovely cardinal. I miss seeing colorful birds here in Arizona, where the only cardinals I have ever seen are the football team! :-) All the birds here seem to be black or brown.

Thanks for leaving a nice comment. Yes, we are in Wi. Never thought I would be a bird watcher but we enjoy it.

Hi Moonlake,

Cardinals are one of my favorite birds. I especially love to see them in the winter, contrasted against the snow.

Very nice pictures in another nice hub :)

Hi trish1048 Thanks for stopping by. I also love cardinals but it is very rare to get one here. The one in the picture was only here a short time. I had a terrible time getting his picture.

From what I've seen so far in your hubs, you have a lovely place to be living. I think the picture is pretty good!

We're going to have to take down the old tree. It's a danger now.
