BitTorrent, most people are familiar with this term whether he/she use it or not. It's a P2P protocol for downloading anime, books, games, movies, music, pictures, software, TV shows etc. To download these types of files freely, people have to know some terms regarding this. This page describes some terms like BitTorrent, BitTorrent Clients, torrent File,  Seeders, Leetches, Peers, Tracker, Swarm, Reseed etc.

BitTorrent / Torrent:

  • A peer-to-peer (or P2P) protocol designed for distributing large files.
  • By using it, users can connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file.
  • It's often used for distributing very large, popular and free files.
  • By using it, you can download anime, books, games, movies, music, pictures, software, TV shows etc.
  • To download the desired files, users need a torrent client and a torrent file which is a .torrent extension.

BitTorrent Clients:

Seeds / Seeders/ Seeding / Seed / Seeds:

  • A client containing a complete copy of the data of a certain torrent.
  • When any BitTorrent client finishes downloading, it remains open until finish or close button is clicked form the client. This is known as seeding or seeds. The client is termed as seeders.

.torrent file:

  • It's a small metadata file that contains information about the data of the desired downloading file, not the data itself.
  • BitTorrent client needs .torrent file for connecting to the tracker and for downloading  the actual data.
  • .torrent files are available several websites like isohunt, mininova etc.

Leechers / Leeching / Leech / Peer / Peers:

  • A client which is currently downloading the data of a torrent.
  • It doesn't have the complete data.
  • When the leecher has the complete data. begins seeding and become a seeder.

Tracker:

  • A central server which coordinates the action of all seeders and leechers in the Internet..
  • Only manages the connections.
  • It doesn't have any knowledge of the distributed files, and thus, supports a large number of uses at a time with limited bandwidth.
  • There are two types of trackers:
  1. Public trackers
  2. Private trackers

Puplic tracker:

  • A tracker that requires no registration their websites before using the torrent.
  • This type of torrent files are not marked as "P" with red color background.

Private tracker:

  • A tracker that requires registration their websites before using the torrent.
  • Such tracker has high amount of seeds because users get banned if the ratio of seeds are very low.
  • This type of torrent files are marked as "P" with red color background.

Specialized Trackers

There are specialized tracker sites such as

Swarm:

  • Total no of machines which are connected for a particular file. For example, if P is a BitTorrent client and if it tells to P that P is connected to 50 peers and 48 seeds. Then swam will be P and 98 other persons.

Reseed:

  • If no of seed is zero for a particular torrent, then all peers will get stuck with an incomplete file. Here no one in the swam contains the missing pieces. In this case, a seed must connect and transfer to the swam for providing the missing pieces. This is known as reseed.

How to download Torrent Files

Downloading:

  • Receiving data from another machine or machines in the Internet.

Uploading:

  • Sending data to another machine or machines in the Internet.

Most Recent Pages

Share Rating:

  • It is the ratio of uploaded data divided by downloaded data.
  • If it is 00 means infinity.
  • Share rating is just a number.

Distributed copies:

  • Sometimes, there is no seed. But has peers with incomplete file. With all the peers, a complete file can be possible. Then it's known as distributed copy. For example, a music CD contains 12 music videos. Person P has 1-8 songs and person Q has 9-12 songs. Then, P and Q has all songs of the CD combined. It's treated as distributed copies
  • Using distributed copy, everyone can get the complete file.

All these terms are the basic terms. These terms are described so shortly that anyone can get the basic idea. If you with to have a advanced level idea, you may visit the official BitTorrent website.
