Crab Like Spider

Strange Looking Arachnida

This won't be a long hub...more of can anyone identify this spider type hub. We have had two different ones of these spiders weaving webs out back of our house across the walk and now one at our front door.

The one out back actually changed its location from between two shrubs with several feet between them to across our brick walk both were the level that you would walk into it if you didn't notice the web. I have tried more times than I can count to get a good photo but their position and color is extremely hard to catch the right angle.

The one on the front door way, I actually used a broom to clear away all webs and swept away the spider, to look a short time later to see it back building the web again! I sat on the steps watching it spin its web. It was very fascinating!

Here are a few photos of the one out back and one of the front door entry.

I have very small ones like that. They have eyes that are on tope of their little heads and will look up at me. The have a white dot on the abdomen on the top side. They do bite and get in between sheets. Found this out the hard way and had an ER visit because my bottom of my foot swelled up for a couple of weeks.

You really think on your feet! Last night I found a large brown spider next to my desk. I never thought to take a picture of it! I just killed it. I need to do some more thinking! haha! I do not know much about spiders though! Good read.

What you have is a Spiny-backed Orbweaver (Gasteracantha cancriformis). They are generally found out in the open, weaving their orb webs (circular shaped webs) between objects such as plant or tree branches or on fences. Lady Guinevere, they are NOT normally found indoors or in bedding as they catch insects in their orb webs outside. They come in many shades, mainly white, but also red, orange, yellow. They are found throughout the southern U.S.
