Background

Bladder infections conjure all types of grimaces onto faces of many women who tend to usually be the unhappy victims of this most uncomfortable infection. Bladder infections are also known as cystitis or UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections). It is a common condition with a variety of sources, easy remedies and many methods of prevention of recurrence.

Symptoms

Symptoms of bladder infections include frequent and/or painful urination, a burning sensation, the strong urge to urinate often with little or no urine output, a strong odor emanating from expelled urine, or even fever and blood or pus present in urine. It can be quite uncomfortable and you should seek the assistance of a doctor if the condition continues beyond 24 hours.

Causes

Nearly 85% of UTIs are caused by the bacteria commonly known as E. coli. When the bacteria pass through the urethra it can get inside the bladder and cause an infection. Some females get urinary tract infections more frequently. This may be due to the differences in the shape and length of the urethra in different people. A female with a shorter urethra may get more UTIs. Most women's urethras are only about 40mm (1.5 inches) long. Males generally get fewer bladder infections than females because they have longer urethras.

There are several ways bacteria can get into the urethra. Poor hygiene practices increase your chances of allowing bacteria to enter your urethra. Infections are also common in women who wear tight jeans. The tight fit of the jeans prevents air from circulating in the crotch area which allows the continual presence of moisture in which bacteria thrives. Post menopausal and pregnant women seem to be at higher risk along with diabetics.

Home Treatment Options

Cranberry juice has been shown to prevent reoccurrences of bladder infections. It has antioxidants which inhibit growth of the nasty bacteria that causes the UTI. Drinking plenty of clear liquids is also a good habit to deter UTIs. If you don't get relief from this treatment in 3 days or so, you will need to see your doctor as the infection can become serious if not treated.
