Blog Action Day 08 - Poverty

Poverty is an option...
Poverty is an option...

Poverty - all of these things, need not be...

In a world of plenty, where some have only a scant,

these things, need not be.

A lack of the means of providing material needs or comforts,

All of these things, need not be.

Un-productiveness, for lack of mentoring,

need not be.

Neediness is not necessary,

and need not be.

Destitution is unacceptable,

and need not be.

Poverty - These Things are Unacceptable!

Poverty, and that which can change - if we choose it to be so...
Poverty, and that which can change - if we choose it to be so...

Individual hardship,

Is a road that knows many travelers...

and must needs be.

IF there were not those, with great need, then not one of us would ever come to know - who we really are, and the depths of our own souls.

Would you lift up the down trodden, to where you have found comfort, rest and peace?

Would you embrace a reduced brother, to build up his knowledge; about the worth of a soul?

Would you give of yourself, and of your means to others; even upon finding that in doing so - you, yourself and your own, are now equal?

Poverty - Blog Action Day 08

Would you? Will you...
Would you? Will you...

Pride is, "the great stumbling block" to all of these things;

for until we truly understand all of our equality, before God... all of these things, will STILL be.

"When ye have done it unto the least of these... ",

ye have done it - unto Yourself.

Three Billion People Are Living In Poverty... Hands

Write-On! Acknowledgements, Requests and Final Thoughts - on Poverty:

I only found out about Blog Action Day, yesterday - when a fellow blogger friend, A Good Husband, tweeted his own post about Poverty - on twitter. Like a good twitter friend, I followed his link and read his blog post. I was so touched by it, that I then decided to StumbleUpon it, and review it...

Needless to say, he soon learned that not only had I commented on the actual post about poverty, but that I did the StumbleUpon thing, too. Naturally - he sent out a tweet back to me, to say "thank you". He also encouraged me to join him, today - for Blog Action Day 08. Long story short, I checked out what all this action day buzz was about, and the rest is now my-story!

I admit it - I am a sucker for a cause. Not just any cause mind you. The issue of Poverty, and its many many facets, is something that from my own, very personal corner - can somewhat relate to. I believe that Poverty has many faces, to different people, who are living in different circumstances, and who have varying perspectives. I am humbled, to add my very small voice to this topic, and encourage each one of us to try, and do just a little bit better - in doing more good - in the world.

Since I am just now finding out about this great blogging event, and would like to feature other Blog Action Day Bloggers, submissions on Poverty - here with my own contribution - I will be adding these link as I become aware of them....

Thanks for the link and thanks for participating in Blog Action Day. I've had the BAD ad on my blog for a few weeks. I never though about actually inviting somebody to participate. That sound from my end would be the palm of my hand smacking my forehead.

I'm glad good husband guy thought to invite you. I'm hoping it all does some good.

Thank you for sharing this Hub. There is much we can all do to engage in social action and reform. I have been a social worker for 38 years and I can relate directly to the suffering caused by poverty. Please check out my new hub too on Emotional Recovery. Sincerely: Gary Eby, author and therapist.

Thank you for this excellent reminder of what's important on this planet we all live in. This is also a cause I support.

I grew up in a poor family, although I didn’t know it at the time. We had what we needed. My father died when I was 9 years old, leaving several children for my mom to raise. I really appreciate the little things neighbors and church friends did to bless our lives. It is important for me now, to help less fortunate children, to be their friend, to teach, encourage and inspire them.

(I am doing the "I'm not worthy" thing right now; to you:-) Social workers, truly understand about poverty! I have a daughter and son-in-law, who have degrees in social work. I honor all those who give to others, is so many ways - through the work of social work, in our communities.

In fact, my daughter, named her first child - after a young girl that she met while doing work in Chicago, over a summer. Now, that must have been something wonderful. It is a true gift, that I so respect - in those who do so much for those they do not even know, but come to love.

Thank you for commenting:-)

Me too! However, there was a time, during my parent's divorce - that I came to know and understand how very poor I had become. My heart is very compassionate to children, in particular - that are estranged from either a mother, or a father. This is true poverty - to my own, personal heart.

As you mentioned, this kind of poverty can only be alleviated, through others who are willing to reach out and provide, that which is needful.

We can eliminate poverty - in our lifetime. We can do it. Feed one child, and then the next.

Working together, it's possible.

Write on,

Thank you for reminding me about Blog Action Day. I had intended on participating but it had slipped my braindead mind. I believe that if we all DO something to help another the world will be a much happier place. Great article with beautiful pictures and videos as always.

Well, I'm trying to start a new blog. And, while surfing around in Hubland, I found this. Never heard of Blog Action Day before this!

Guess I know what my first blog post will be about -- and it'll have to be up by tonight. So much for procrastination. ;-} Serendipity, gotta love it! Many thanks for the inspiration.

Thank you for posting about poverty on Blog Action Day. I have been wandering around the Internet commenting on people's blogs to thank them for days now and I'll be doing it for a few more weeks. Thank you also for linking to other people's blogs so I can find them!

What has been most exciting to me is seeing narrow "niche" blogs where the authors have managed to tie their expertise in with poverty. I loved your poetic approach to posting, especially at the last minute.

Let's remember that poverty is not only in exotic faraway places, but next door: our neighbours, our friends, and I hope people will start reaching out to them to help erase this blight on our world!

Thank you again for a great post!

Hi Cyththia -

Thank you for taking the time to comment, (and it sounds like on many blogs) on my small contribution to Blog Action Day. I hope you had a chance to watch the video about "Poverty in our own backyard", which focuses on poverty right here in American. So, you are right about our need to look closely - to find poverty.

Poverty is such a harsh way to live. Living in Mexico surrounded by poor families helped me appreciate all I have here in America. Even little things like having hot water in the shower is a blessing. Great article.

Really, it only requires that we take notice of what others lack, and that which we have - to understand the dept of poverty in this world.

Thank you.
