Blood Bowl in my life.....past to present
How can a game that is considered dead be so alive? Why does Blood Bowl hold so much attention? Where can you find Blood Bowl products and why bother to look?
It amazes me still that a game can hold so much fascination world-wide for as long as Blood Bowl has. So what is this fascination and where does it start? You could ask that question about football, soccer, or rugby. Most people that have fanatical sports loving parents seem to have sport loving children. So, I guess my answer would be that it starts in the home where most everything else starts.
That's the way my love for Blood Bowl started at least. I can remember growing up and seeing gigantic trophies on the shelf that were from Blood Bowl titles. You see, my dad and all of his friends would get together every Saturday and play games of some sort. As a child, this was great!! I would get to play with all of my cousins and friends every weekend while the parents did their own thing. It was normal for all of us children. Or so we thought!!!
Good incentive for play is actual trophies!! Who doesn't want one?
My dad seemed to win a lot of trophies. Blood Bowl Champion, Division Champion, Second place or Runner-up. The shelf was littered with them and they were big trophies! So naturally, I thought that when I grew up I would get a shot at getting my own. Right there's where it started..... the big shiny trophies. Now , when my neighborhood friends came over during the weekdays, they would see all the trophies wonder what the heck my dad did to earn those. So out of curiosity they would ask me what they were. ";;;Well , they're Blood Bowl trophies";;; I would say. ";;;What the heck is that , some sort of Blood Donor award?";;; they would usually respond. After trying to explain to them for an hour that it was a board game , they could'nt believe you could get trophies for playing board games. So you get the point , I think. I realized quickly that we did things that the average American household did not. It wasn't bad but definitely different.
Other ways to gain players is to help them paint or just paint their teams. ( My dad says, his free days are over!)
Every year more people would join the league . But ,because finding people was so difficult , my dad would almost always offer to paint their team for them. He ended up painting many teams for nube players. He always had the best looking team. He spent hours adding things that other would not. He nearly won every year and I think he thought that if he was gonna be the best then he better have the best! Alot of people would try to paint their own and since they didn't paint so often they usually looked like crap! Sorry guys but you know it's true. It was then that I noticed something. It seemed to me , that teams would finish each year almost like a painting contest. How their teams were painted seemed to affect how they finished the year out. Now don't start attacking me with comments about how you can win with unpainted guys...yada...yada...yada. I know you can and it's quite possible. But I think in their situation, confidence took the side of the best painted team.As if , intimidation was a factor.
Do well painted miniatures really matter?
Now , I can't say for sure. But I would bet that the #1 guy in the NAF has a nicely painted team. I would also bet that other high ranking guys in the NAF have nice teams. Pro golfers have the nicest clubs , pro NBA stars have the nicest shoes , and pretty much any pro has the nicest equipment he/she can have. So I think it stands to reason that having nice equipment can help lead to success. That's not a sales pitch by the way , just an observation. Back to the story..........
I never did achieve the Blood Bowl glory my dad did. I never really took up painting everyday either. Those days of Blood Bowl glory had vanished over time as people moved away and Blood Bowl was no longer sold at our local hobby stores. In fact ,due to the rising rate of video games I feel most peoples interest shifted away from boardgames and hobby shops all together .We watched helplessly as they closed the doors for good.
At the height of my dads Blood Bowl league, there were 16 members of age 16 to late 30's. And occasionally I run into them and they still talk about the glory days of Blood Bowl and what a great game it was.But more importantly , how much fun it was and that they still have the trophies. You see the trophies were an acheivement, something worth holding onto over the years. They could always look at them and reflect on that season that they were the champion. If you asked them about details they could quickly rehash incidents that occured during the match, even years later.
Make the Trophies fun and exciting to win
Have fun with the trophies. For instance, the first year they bought a horses ass trophy that said Toilet Bowl Champ. At the same time as the BLOOD BOWL/(Super Bowl) was going on ,,the two worst teams from each division would play to see who got the Toilet Bowl Trophy. Sounds a little cruel but there's a few good things about it.
- This brought together two players who otherwise would not care who won on that day of the BLOOD BOWL. Chances are good that they would not even show up to watch the match. But now they would have one last game for the season.
- In ten years no one ever got the Toilet Bowl Title back to back seasons . They always improved on the next years season. If you get stuck staring at a horses ass for a year then you can't wait to dump it off into the next guys lap.
- At least you got something and got to participate in a Bowl Game. The remaining player would always come to watch the Blood Bowl and the Toilet Bowl !!!! It was fun to watch them both.
How did we find out about Blood Bowls life after death?
Until two years ago I avoided computers like the plague. I hated them with a passion. I didn't even know how to get email. Yah !! That's no exageration !!!! Then I learned of a ways to make money selling on-line as a substitute to getting a second job. That got my attention since I have three kids and a wife to feed. It was shortly after that , that I learned that Blood Bowl had not died completely. Rather, it had under went a series of alterations. In fact hundreds of thousands of people were still playing different forms of it all over the world.
Why sell in such a specified niche?
I learned all of this because my dad saw that I was selling some of my old minis on-line with limited success and asked me to sell one of his teams. I didn't research it, I just made a listing on Ebay like this...........
Calling all Blood Bowl fans, are there any left out there?
Bang !!!! Huge response!! I had more visits in an hour than most of my other stuff had in a full 7 day listing. Bids rolling in from all over the world. Italy , Germany , Austria , the U.S. , Spain , and I was dumbfounded. How could a dead game be so popular? The reason was simple. Just because it died in my life doesn't mean everyone else let it go. They hung on and continued to play.... Meanwhile, in our area, there were no leagues in existence anymore.
You can sell something you love? Wait... that sounds too much like doing something you love......that's not possible is it?
So I knew what niche market to sell in. But sourcing product is a whole nother ball game. Games-workshop has very strict rules about inter-net sales and who they will work with. I'll save that story for another day.......The beautiful thing about Blood Bowl is the variety of teams and miniatures. You can substitute just about any Warhammer guy to fit your squad from all different races. There are companies making fantasy football miniatures all over the world. Impact Miniatures, Heresy , Hassel Free, Shadow Fordge, the list goes on and on. Cool stuff too! Not wimpy guys in bad poses.Miniatures with great detail and very imposing looks and females......that ....well......Ya know........FEMALES!!!!! After you paint them up you can have a fantastic squad with a great variety. Far more variety than the days of my dads league. That's what we do now. We specialize in making custom teams and accessories , far more advanced then the days of old. Scroll to the bottom to check out our stuff.
Thers's alot of others doing fantastic work
I can remember my uncle painting an orc blocker on his basement wall! The orc of course matched his team uniforms. I thought that was awesome!!! He and my dad battled for first and second constantly. They made their own fields using felt on plywood and laid out the lines with sharpies. Talk about lame!!! Have you seen some of the stuff on the web now?!!!!Just look at this stuff Gobstyk's Gaming Club, Blood Bowl Becker F. Whaoooo!!! This stuff is amazing .. Fantastic work guys!!! I love it!!! Anyway, Blood Bowl is obviously still alive and thriving. I'm not even going to mention the Internet version of the game. First of all I know nothing about it and secondly it doesn't interest me as much as the original board game does. Not saying it's bad , just don't care!!!!
You can always stop by and chat with us on our Blog Thanks for reading all of this and I hope you got some enjoyment out of it.
