How to Choose Blood Pressure Equipment for Home Use
69Blood pressure equipment is often overlooked in terms of what needs to be kept in the home to maintain good health. This is unfortunate, because hypertension is likely the most commonly undiagnosed condition in the country because in many cases, no physical symptoms are present until the damage caused by the hypertension is well underway. Readings taken in the doctor’s office also tend to be inaccurate due to what is known as, “white coat syndrome,” in which a patient’s blood pressure rises simply because he or she is nervous about seeing the doctor and what may be found. For these reasons and more, it is important to keep a few pieces of blood pressure equipment in the home to ensure continued good health, if not to monitor existing hypertension.
What Blood Pressure Equipment Is Best?
The monitor is the most important piece of blood pressure equipment that you could own. This is the device that will actually allow you to take your blood pressure reading on your own. There are a wide variety of models available, but they basically break down into two categories: aneroid and digital.
The aneroid model is the standby that you will find in just about every doctor’s office in the country. It is considered to be the standard in the industry. It utilizes a manual ball to inflate the cuff and a dial face to show the reading. This type of machine also requires a stethoscope to use because it does not report anything on its own, so it may be a bit too awkward and labor intensive for most people to use at home.
The digital model is much more straightforward. It generally features a large digital face and pump, which connects directly to the cuff and sensor. The user simply attaches the cuff and presses a button, and the machine does all the work for you. It even displays your reading for you without having to listen for your heartbeat yourself. For most home applications, it is the ideal choice.

The cuff should also not be neglected when purchasing blood pressure equipment. There are several different varieties, and your needs may necessitate a particular one. If you are overweight or have large arms, you will want to purchase a larger cuff that you can fit comfortably around your arm without straining. For extremely overweight people, you may want to consider a thigh cuff, which is larger still.
Blood pressure equipment may for many seem to be an extraneous expense that is entirely unnecessary for most homes, but considering the prevalence of hypertension in our society and the dangers of leaving it untreated, you may want to reconsider keeping one around the house to ensure continued good health.
