No More Blow

Extreme controversy is being stirred up in the news today as the latest fad, Blow Energy Drink, takes the nation by storm. Outraged parents, activists, narcotic agents and news media are being "blown away" by the product that has sold millions since its recent inception. APD Narcotic detective Ernest Serda, claims that Blow "promotes a criminal lifestyle and glorifies criminal activity".

Multiple vials of the white powdery substance are shipped in a styrofoam container to mimic the appearance of a brick of cocaine with a large label reading "I Love Blow" pasted to the outside of it. What is even more disturbing is that it comes with it's very own drug paraphernalia, a credit card and a mirror! News media are saying that the product is causing as much controversy as the real deal!

I Love Blow

Brilliant Marketing Scheme!

All I have to say is "BRILLIANT"! What better way to promote a product than to target the most vulnerable and easily influenced market in the world, the "ultra-hip party crowd", the teenager who is looking for a way to fit in, to be popular, to be amongst the "in crowd". If you think that this was not a calculated, premeditated strategy, then think again. Logan Gola, the creator of Blow, is a genius, in my opinion, and he is probably laughing all the way to the bank. The more outrage that is stirred up in the media, the more product he sells. Talk about a modern-day Kingpin, this guy corners the market! Although they include a warning on the packaging saying that you should be over 18 to use it, there are no current laws YET, regulating it's use to anyone who wants to buy it. In fact, to prove my point, I just ordered some online, and they did not even ask me my age!

Blow is sold in convenience stores, night clubs and specialty stores around the nation. And the webiste, www.iloveblow.com, is drawing in hits by the millioins! While the public is claiming that Blow pushes kids into drug addiction, Gola denies any evidence to that charge, and tells concerned opposers of the product to "get over it and move on to more important things".

Blow Nutritional Facts

Review of Major Ingredients

Blow is said to be 3 times the strength of it's competitor, Red Bull, and contains 240 mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to about 3 cups of coffee. It also has 2000 mg. of Taurine which is twice as much as Red Bull and 140 mg of Inositol. As you can see from the label, it has no calories, fat, carbs or protein and it's only nutritional value, is the B vitamins and perhaps Inositol!

Taurine is an organic acid, and according to Wikipedia, is a "major constituent of ox bile". It is found in the tissues of many animals and also humans. It was first isolated from ox bile in 1827 and has been used in recent years in energy drinks because of its ability to decrease muscle fatigue and increase exercise capacity. While Rockstar and Monster both boast an equal amount of Taurine, it is the marketing of the product Blow, that is helping to sell the product, and not the product itself, as it is really not much different than other energy drinks, and they know it!

Inostitol is a component of cell membranes and is found in virtually every cell in our bodies. It helps to establish healthy cell membranes which help to facilitate nerve impulses. Some studies have shown that Inositol can help individuals suffering from various conditions, such as bulimia, panic disorder, impotence and bipolar depression. It is said to help regulate the central nervous system. It is no wonder then, that energy drink manufacturers would add it to help sell their energy drink products. If it will boost sales, then hell, let's add it!

And, let's not forget about good ol' caffeine! As stated previously, they say that 240 mg. of caffeine is like drinking about 3 cups of coffee. While that does not seem to be harmful, doctors do warn that too much can cause an increase in blood pressure, rapid heart beat and heart palpitations. Now doesn't that sound great for our kids! And where is this on the label of Blow Energy drink? I assure you, no where to be found! It is important to note that people should NOT mix this crap with any other caffeinated beverages, as this could spell trouble!

It Boils Down to Parental and Media Control

While the website is easily accessible to all kids who have computers, and it uses sexually explicit images and rock music to "lure" kids in, it all boils down to parental and media control. Parents need to monitor what websites their children are frequenting, what products they are buying with their credit cards, and get involved with their kids against the war on drugs and any kind of lifestyle that promotes them. And, the media needs to just "back off" and let these things die a slow, natural death.

While Blow Energy Drink does have the propensity to have a negative impact on our society, if parents would learn to pay more attention to their children's activities, and the media would not assist these Capitalist-driven companies with their marketing strategies, then overzealous marketing campaigns would not be such a threat.

While I am not condoning what Blow marketers have done here, I am putting part of the responsibility back onto parents and the media. If the media would not have "BLOWN" this product way out of proportion in the first place, sales would not have sky-rocketed to magnificent proportions, as they did. We all need to take responsibility to protect our kids, and that includes parents, the media and society as a whole!

I don't know if ZBrilliant is the word..more like sinister....A society can not exist if there is no shared understanding of what is right and what is wrong. While I agree parents need to have control of their kids, products and marketing like this serve no benifit to anyone besides the people making the money off it yet cause harm to many many more. It is illogical to blame the media or parents, the products marketing is who hold all accountability here.

Great post, thanks for the other viewpoint

I don't know - there are millions of products sitting around that never get any publicity and never make many sales.

It doesn't matter how damaging a product is if nobody buys it.

The free publicity whipped up by a hypocritical media is what makes something trendy and desirable. Of course, the media will just LOVE it if some actual damage happens to someone, because then they will be able to sensationalise that, too.

The best way to kill a product off is for the media to totally ignore it.

Funnebone: Yes, I do believe that the company should be accountable for their actions, and I actually think that the FDA should get involved here and possibly at least regulate it to some point, but I also think that I do have a valid point about parents and media participation in this problem. Thanks for the comment, you should have posted your link as well.

Jenny, Yes, I agree and that is what I say in the last part.

Roderic: Thanks, don't know how unbiased I am, but I tried to give a different viewpoint than perhaps others to make people think.....

This is an ALL TIME low for any company. It would be naive to think that all the young people who go for this swill will  move on to the real "blow", but guaranteed, this loosens some of them up for the real thing. Get them saying it enough..and the barriers become much easier to breach. It's just so wrong, and they nothing more than another irresponsible, opportunistic, and greedy company determined to do anything for a buck, without concern for those that might be harmed by thier actions.

I absolutely agree, but they aren't the first company to do this. The FDA supposedly removed an energy drink called "Cocaine" off the market, but I saw a google ad for it today, so go figure....thanks for your comments.

I agree that the founder of this company is brilliant. He has done a fabulous job marketing his product.

Will I buy it? Heck no. If I knew any of my teenage cousins were interested in it or thought it was cool, would I encourage them? Heck no. But, they probably wouldn't be interested because they are well-adjusted people who have learned how to make good choices. One of my favorite sayings: Values = Choices = Consequences.

By the way, great hub!

Thanks Stacie...While I do think he is brilliant, I also think he is an arrogant Pr-ck...if you watch him on TV, he may be brilliant about his marketing strategy, but he is ignorant in the fact that he is in complete denial of the negative implications that his product has...I guess I should reword this article to include my views on this, as I don't want people to think I agree w/ him, only that what a stupid genious he is to come up w/ this crap.

you are definitley right about the media! they are spiking the public's curiosity by making such a big deal about it. If it had gone ignored, his product would be like any other "new" energy drink that came out after redbull and monster. they would slowly fade into the back of the 7-11 refrigerator like all the rest.

It sounds like he is aiming straight for middle school and high school kids. they know they aren't supposed to do drugs...BUT! they aren't fully aware of the consequences of drugs. They havent seen the aftermath quite yet and all the cool kids are doing it, so why not try it.....the cool kids look cool doing it.

Just in the video you show here he seems like a jerk. I agree that while it is a brilliant plan, it isn't something I condone or support.

WoW reading this I was "blown" away. (snicker)..

Sorry couldn’t resist a good pun..

As Logan apparently couldn’t either? Initially I was laughing my ass off at this.. Wow the bal* on this guy..

I thought emin Em has huge cohunes but this guy is just asking for law enforcement, the FDA and the rest of the activist groups to nail him to a cross..

The concept is truly brilliant but the message it sends and the extent to which he took it is very immoral and ridiculous.

It would be one thing to call it blow, and sell it in a "vile" looking container with the coke dust on the cover..

So far I see nothing really bad about this as it may be controversial but most people would just laugh and throw the powder into their water..

But when you add the credit card, the fake mirror and the many references to drugs (even the white "brick" and the other packages (reseller? lol)) really takes it too far..

that’s like saying hey go buy our cool dart gun, then shaping it like a 9 millimeter, then selling darts that look like 9mm shells, then putting dead pictures of cops on the cover of the gun packaging calling the dart cop killers?

Like I said the marketing concept was funny, but when you take it to this extreme it becomes a problem, not only with the concept but because it does market to the youth generation and like the guy said in the video kids are inquisitive and the way their marketing it makes it a gateway drug,

because kids will only get so many "high's" from the drink mix before their body starts to build a tolerance and what do you think they will think of next?

yep Coke..

The ingredients in the drink also make it more potent than ANY energy drink on the market other than NOS (which has ridiculously too much of everything)..

The Taurine ingredient (which I'm surprised wasn’t mentioned once on either news cast) being at 2,000mg is pretty high for one drink, most energy drinks have only 1000 and that’s a 2 guzzler can (24-36 oz) which limits how much you will drink as you will fill up,

if you throw this into a small bottled water you will drink it all and a lot of shaking and uncomfortable feelings will happen (coke like actually)..

Since no other drink will "satisfy" the same feeling they will try substances instead..

Interesting story..

Jerrico, great comments dude....you should be a product reviewer...go to Epinions.com for that one.....

Toyia, I am thinking that the FDA may just pull it from the market, but we just have to wait and see! Thanks for both your comments.

I wouldn't recommend anyone touch the stuff. Thanks for reporting on it, but you left out one of the nasty ingredients, "Aspartame". If anyone thinks that's just a harmless artificial sweetner I would encourage you to do some research on the web. Here's one link to a page that talks about the dangers of asparatame. (It's not my page) http://www.aspartamekills.com/mpvalley/

Of course none of the ingredients are of any benefit for anyone that wishes to remain healthy!

You are right, I did only list some of the main ingredients, but I thank you for bringing it to the readers attention and even if it was your page, it would be ok, I want people to be informed in all aspects.
