Blu electronic cigarettes are one of the most popular e-cigs on the market today. While still a relative newcomer in the realm of smoking alternatives, Blu e-cigs are inexpensive, easy to use, and come with a variety of cartridge flavors for smokers of many styles. Satisfying the craving for nicotine in a way that causes no smell, no tar and for a fraction of the cost of traditional cigarettes, Blu electronic cigarettes are a product that many people have flocked to.

Since the company began selling it's product, there have been a few hiccups, and on 9/29/09 a warning was distributed informing Blu e-cig users to dispose of their blu packs immediately. For more information, please read on.

Not exactly a recall, but in an announcement sent down on 9/29/2009, Blucigs released information stating the following:

"Our battery manufacturer has identified an issue that could lead to overcharging of the Lithium Polymer battery and eventual rupturing of the battery case. If the battery case ruptures, it could result in combustion of the gases and create a fire hazard."

For customers who purchased starter kits, this means that the only way to safely charge your batteries is to use either the USB charger or the Wall charger in conjunction with the USB charger. Here's how you do that:

Using the USB and Wall Chargers

To charge your Blu e-cig using the USB charger unit, simply screw your battery into the open end of the USB charger, then connect the USB to the appropriate outlet on your computer.  A light will come on indicating the battery is charging, and once complete the battery will change color and you can unplug the battery, ready for use.

To use the Blu wall charger, plug the battery into the USB attachment as above, then connect the USB to the base of the wall charger.  Plug this in, and again wait for the light to change color.

As for the blu pack, the manufacturer of the battery has identified the risk and causes, and newly redesigned packs are going to be shipped out to every customer who purchased a starter kit or pack so far.

What do you do with your old Blu pack?

Proper disposal of the blu pack is relatively simple as well.  DO NOT simply throw the pack away.

  1. Locate a recycling center at which you can drop off your blu pack for proper disposal by visiting:  Call 2 Recycle
  2. For DIY'ers, the blu pack may be (once emptied, save your cartridges and batteries!) soaked in salt water for a period of two weeks, at which point it is safe to put in your trash.  This is recommended to be done in a five gallon bucket, which you will fill with 3-5 gallons of cold water, followed by 1/2 cup of salt per gallon of water.  Do not use un-salted water!  After two weeks, you are safe to throw the blu pack away.

If you have any questions on this procedure or the technical default in the blu pack, you can contact customer care at customerservice@blucigs.com.

I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago - maybe this is part of the "back order" delay. (I used your link to order, gamergirl - your last hub about Blu got me thinking and I finally decided to give them a try.)

Awww, thank you dineane! I feel much better knowing that they're sending out free replacements and holding orders until the safe parts are in stock. I'd never promote a product that may blow up on my family and friends. Hopefully it'll not take too terribly long to get the new parts in.
