PyramidCam which take live image of the pyramids every 30 seconds captured a rare occurrence, a blue sun phenomenon in Egypt. Scientists have a theory for the blue color appearance of the sun.

Only a few have recorded the rare occurrence of the blue sun so far, and one of them is the PyramidCam which was able to capture this golden moment. Thanks to it we can also see it here.

Craig Bohren has written about this blue sun phenomenon in his book ‘Clouds in a Glass of Beer’ in page 91, you can access the book in Google here.

Robert Wilson, an Astronomer in the Royal laboratory observed both the blue sun and the blue moon phenomenon in Edinburgh, Scotland. Based on his observations and other observations and some calculations, he was able to conclude the forest fires in Alberta which traveled across from the Atlantic to Europe caused this phenomenon. The oil droplets, formed in the combustion products of the fires, suspended in the air caused this color illusion in the sun. Oil particles have low vapor pressure; they are transported very easily by the winds.

Just like Robert Wilson, the observers in Egypt saw some fires between the sun and the pyramid, which rose high with the winds. They observed this fire smoke in many of the images they captured along with this blue sun image. Separately they have also captured long plumes of smoke visible behind the pyramids, particularly in winter when farmers burn stubble in the fields in the Delta and around Cairo.

Without these fires the sun would have appeared normal. For more images of the sun and the pyramids visit pyramidcam.com.
