Vicious Pit Bull

American Pit Bull Terriers are the most vicious breed out there, right? I mean they're a danger to both children and men, alike. Ignore the statistics, they're not the least likely breed to bite; they're vicious and a hazard to any home...

Well, now let's get to the serious stuff...

Although, the "pit bull" is the is statistically, the cause of most dog attacks, the American Pit Bull Terrier, is truly the least likely to bite a human. When you get to the resources behind the numbers, you realize that the majority of the dogs that attack are either abused, starved, badly bred, or some other blend of characteristics that lead up to an attack. But, you usually don't hear about that...

But, this isn't about dog attacks or vicious "pit bulls," it's about my Blue APBT, MIA.

For a short introduction to the American Pit Bull Terrier, the following articles will help enlighten even those skeptical about the breed.

APBT mix (ADOPTED)

Here's my plug for APBT's, well sort of...

Name: Jade

Age: approximately 3 years

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier mix

Color: White with red markings. Red nose.

Notes: Housetrained. Knows basic commands and will act pretty (rolls on her back and wiggles). Gets along with other dogs of all sizes and ages. Is mostly good with cats; she acts as though she wants to chase them, but with a simple "no," she stops. She currently, sleeps in the bed and is a cuddle bug.

Jade and her 7 month old puppy were surrendered after her owner committed suicide. The woman's boyfriend was in jail for a driving without a license charge. And, the woman's children did not want the dogs, so both were surrendered. They are currently being fostered.

** Adopting information, you can contact Claws N Paws. Although, in Georgia, they will ship animals, at the dollar of the adoptee. All adoption applications must be approved.

So cute! I agree that pits can get a bad rap. We had a Staffordshire Bull Terrier years ago (the English breed - not Am Staff). We were told by his breeders that they are called "nanny dogs" in the UK. Hershey was always very gentle with our kids. Now, our dog Garrett (photo with me), we adopted from the Humane Society, and they think he has some pit bull in him. But a super, super dog. Love the hub and photos. Steph

Steph- It is true the breed has been called a "nanny dog" in the past. It's just so unfortunate about their current rep. Staffordshires, AmStaffs, and APBTs have all been referred to as "nanny dogs."

I do see the resemblence of "pit bull" in the pup in your picture. Very cute dog.

I love these dogs! Its a shame when they get a bad rap either from poor owners or poor training (or both). I am outraged that some municipalities actually ban them.

Have to agree Whitney,I too have a American Pit Bull. She is absolutely beautiful, great around children.Much of the bad rap comes from the owners. If you are not capable of properly training, loving, caring for them they are great pets.Oh and yes she would bite only if someone attacks my wife or I,or if I in my special way tell her to.

She comes from a very good bloodline Sire was The Brick Farm's Brick Built and Dam was The Brick Farm's Puddin---out of The Brick Farm's Blue---

She is such a good dog if a child starts towards the road she will block them and lead them back---never has she tried to bite anyone.

I love the rat pics and video...SO cute! My Cairn Terrier would have swallowed all 3 rats in a matter of seconds. Her prey drive towards rodents is just too strong.

Your pup is a sweetie. BTW my cousin breeds Staffies and they are 'nanny' dogs. He has 4 young boys. Two are twins with a penchant for getting into trouble. Isabella (their dog) allows the kids to take her pups away from her and cart them around the house. She adores children and is one of the most placid dogs I've ever seen. They now have one of her adult pups with them as well. So 2 Staffies and 4 kids and not an issue between them. :)

I think the owners can make any dog mean. Its a shame this breed is used for fighting. When I see them on tv being removed from a bad situation , it is really heartbreaking.

Thanks for seeing them in a different light.

Thank you Zsuzsy, Froggy, and RFox. She is my baby, and I love her no matter what. I strongly aggree and will fight that not all of these dogs are bad. My parents were iffy and at first didn't want to get an APBT, but after some pleading, they agreed. And know, my dad sees the truth. My mom's still got all the bad rap in the back of her head, but she loves the dog none-the-less. And, it's not like my parents have never spent time with the breed, they have, when I volunteered for a shelter, but it's different bringing a bully breed home. I understand, but it's kinda a life goal, to change as many people's mind about the breed as I can. Pathetic, but all I want is justice for them (all bully breeds).

RFox, she loves those rats. I can barely get alone time with them, unless I shut her out of the room. It's sad. I've ben waiting to publish this until I was able to get that video; it was one my digital video camera, and I couldn't get it off until I bought a plug for my computer. I just wish I could figure out how to better edit it with music. Any music suggestions?

Hi Whitney, Great Hub and Pics. The bad name they get is a typical result of generalizing statistics without looking at the facts behind the figures.

About editing try Animoto.com. Not sure if they use video or just pics but they do have a lot of music to choose from and their editing is great.

Very cute dog. I used to have a fawn with white markings, but sadly he was stolen over a year ago. I still miss him. I'd love to bring home another Pit, but currently, I've got too much going on to bring in a dog. :-(

The only song that immediately came to mind was "Love Is In The Air" by Tom Jones....guess it's my twisted sense of humor..hahaha

I'm usually more of a rock girl myself but now I have Tom Jones stuck in my head!

Though I don't support dog breeding on principle, as there are so many loving dogs that need adopting, I must say I prefer it to the puppy-mill brand of dog "production." I have two mutts that I adopted full-grown (even those who lean towards adoption often prefer pups, leaving the dogs in their young adulthood or older years neglected), and I adore them both.

Whitney05 profile image

Maddie- I fully understand. I volunteered for over 5 years with rescue shelters, but when it comes to APBT, unless I know the story and backgroung of the dog, I would prefer a well bred one. I did search several rescues in the throughout the state of GA, and could not find one with a pup that was right. When I did, it was with an APBT rescue, they denied my application because I was inquiring about a female puppy and already have a female dog. They believe APBTs only get along with opposite sex, which was news to me as it's not always the case.

Love the pictures of your dogs. Mia ha a gorgeous face!

I've been told that about the opposite sexes as well, but when I had two they were both the same sex and got along great. I've only got one now and she does tend to get along with opposite sex dogs better, but it isn't 100%. It just really depends on the dog, I think.

Whitney05 profile image

Whitney05  says:

Thank you embitca. :-) I've heard it, but I don't think it's something that a rescue needs to base part of their application on. As, not every bully breed dog is the same, and some may not get along with the same sex and some don't. It's all dependent on the individual.

HaHaHa. That's what my parents keep saying. You forget what is not shown in this hub- near 40 reptiles and 2 other dogs. Ha. I used to have 3 chinchillas as well, but unfortunately they passed last year; I'm still waiting on their necropsy results, as it was unexpected.

Hi Whitney,

MIA is a beauty! She looks so much like (one of) the pit pups my family had when I was growing up. They are such a wonderful breed when properly raised and loved. Great Hub!

Man, I want a dog sooooo bad. Right now I can't get one, but I'm thinking in the next year I'll get one. I'm thinking of getting a Pit Bull Terrier now because of your article. I love terriers in general.

Whitney05 profile image

Whitney05  says:

Zannr it's great you want a dog, but you must remember that the APBT is not a true terrier. Although, it has terrier influence, it cannot really be grouped with terriers such as the Yorkshire terrier, Jack Russell terrier, etc. You must be prepared for longterm training and socializing with this breed. Although, they catch on quickly, you must be prepared for everything. They're not as simply put as other dog breeds.

MIA is too CUTE! I'm getting a blue APBT female in a couple of days and after watching MIA I just can't wait to get her. Her name is going to be Hannah. She looks a lot like MIA. I'm constantly defending their breed to my family and friends. Bad breeding and bad people have really gave the APBT a bad rep. I worked at a Veterinary clinic for 6 yrs and not one Pit EVER tried to bite us. Some were aggressive towards the other animals especially the cats, but NONE towards us. Thanks so much for the video and pics! They're great!

Mandy  says:

We own three pit bulls. We also have three children in the house. Its not the breed that has given these beautiful animals a bad rep. Its the people who raise them. Any animal will be mean no matter what the breed is if you raise them to be that way. Dogs are mean because people raise them to be. let me tell you all, My three dogs are wonderful. They are very loving and very eager to please. They play with my kids all the time they even put there hands and arms in there mouth and they are so gentle about it there isn't even a scratch or a red mark to be found. Some people are just ignorant to the breed. If only people could see the potential of these animals. How amazed they would be.
